The stinky tofu shop in Tran Quoc Thao apartment building (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) opens at 4:30 p.m. About an hour before, many young people had already lined up to buy.
Previously, many people learned about this information through social networks and came to buy it to try.
Every day when it opens, the restaurant only sells 30-50 portions, and on weekends it sells 100 portions. That's why customers have to come early to line up and get a number to have a chance to buy.
Nghia and Kieu (Hoc Mon district) were the first customers today. Both young people came to the shop at 3pm and had to wait more than 2 hours to buy 2 portions of stinky tofu.
Stinky tofu is a popular street food in China. It smells very bad, some people even compare it to the smell of sewage.
The owner of the restaurant, La Phuc Khang (25 years old), said that he found the recipe for making tofu online and adapted it to suit Vietnamese tastes.
The tofu is fermented for several days with black beans, black sesame and bamboo charcoal powder to naturally ferment and create a characteristic rotten smell. After frying, the tofu will be light yellow, dotted with black spots, served with onions, cilantro and some sauces made by Phuc Khang.
In terms of appearance, Phuc Khang's stinky tofu is quite different from Chinese stinky tofu. Each portion is sold for 25,000 VND, with traditional or sauce options.
"The stinky tofu here is not too strong but still retains its characteristic smell and taste. I will share this dish with my friends," said a diner.
Ms. Thang (District 1) had to come back a third time to enjoy this strange dish.
