On May 20, Google held its annual I/O 2025 developer conference. At the event, the company announced many new tools and features based on artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the conference, CEO Sundar Pichai said that the updates on Google “completely reimagine search” and use “advanced inference” to think before providing answers to users.

“This is an exciting moment for search,” he said.

Google’s latest revelations come as the company faces a slew of questions about the future of its internet search business, with some reports suggesting that search engines in general are in decline as users increasingly turn to AI chatbots.

Here are the tools, features, and plans Google just announced at I/O 2025:

AI mode in search

Google has confirmed that it has started integrating Gemini AI into its search engine. The AI mode has its own tab for users to choose from. Then, they can ask longer, more complex questions to search deeper, instead of having to search multiple times like before.

The feature is coming to US Google users first before expanding to other regions in the coming months.

Google tested the AI mode after launching AI Overviews last year and listening to user feedback. Vice President and Chief Search Officer Elizabeth Reid said AI Overviews has been one of the most successful search products of the past decade, and users have been happy with the results.

Translate live in Google Meet

Google is showing off a live translation tool in its Meet video calling app, one of the many examples of how generative AI will make life easier. Initially, the feature will support back-and-forth translation between English and Spanish. Users will just need to speak their native language and the tool will automatically provide subtitles for the other person to understand.

Mariner Project

This is the name of Google's AI Agent development plan. Mariner plans to launch a new tool this year that can perform automated web tasks on behalf of users.

For example, the user can ask the agent to search for a hotel in the upcoming city, or a part needed to repair a car.

Google says it is in the early stages of the technology but aims to integrate it into Chrome, its search engine and the Gemini app.

AI Movie Maker

At a time when debates about the impact of AI content on the creative industry are heating up, Google continues to show its desire to be a leader in this field. At I/O 2025, the American technology giant introduced a series of new tools, including the Veo 3 video-generating AI, Imagen 4 photo-generating AI, Lyria 2 music-generating AI, and Flow movie-generating AI.

All of them are capable of producing high-quality, lifelike multimedia content. But Google says it’s working closely with the creative industry to help shape how to develop models that work for creators, not replace them.

Android XR

Google has long been planning to make headsets and glasses with Gemini AI. The company said it is working with Samsung on Project Moohan and plans to launch smart glasses running Android XR “later this year.”

According to Google, the Android XR glasses are lightweight and can be worn all day, and are compatible with phones so they don’t require manual control. Thanks to the built-in Gemini AI, the glasses can answer questions based on what the wearer sees and hears. The glasses also have a real-time translation feature like Google Meet.

In addition, Google also collaborated with two fashion brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to help the glasses look more stylish.

Google AI Ultra

Google has announced a super-premium plan for those who want to use its AI technology first. Called Google AI Ultra, the plan costs $249.99/month and gives you access to all of its AI tools first, including its most powerful models.

Tools in the Google AI Ultra package include Gemini, Flow, Whisk, NotebookLM, YouTube Premium, and 30TB of storage.

The secret is out: Why are more and more people saying goodbye to Google? The sharp decline in search traffic is proof that new technology like ChatGPT can overthrow even long-standing 'giants' like Google.
