University Admissions 2025: No limit on subject combinations, increasing opportunities for candidates

In 2025, candidates will be able to choose from a wide range of admission combinations, no longer limited to 4 combinations as before. However, to increase their chances of admission, candidates also need to have a 'strategy' for choosing exam subjects.

The online consultation program organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of April 1 with the topic of Tactics for choosing exam subjects to increase the chance of admission, was broadcast online at: thanhnien.vn , Facebook fanpage, YouTube channel, TikTok Thanh Nien Newspaper, provided a lot of useful information for candidates.

WIDER RANGE OF CHOICE

At the consultation program, Dr. Nguyen Phi Son, Deputy Director and Head of Training Department, Duy Tan University, commented: "This year, the admission regulations do not limit the number of subjects for admission, creating a wider range of subjects for admission. Candidates have the opportunity to choose their strengths to register for the exam and thus have a higher chance of being admitted."

Master Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, also believes that when there are many subject combinations, students will have more flexibility in choosing, accessing many diverse combinations, and maximizing their resources and abilities to be admitted to many majors and many schools.

"However, this also increases competition, so students need to be better prepared to get high scores. Universities will adjust their admission methods and combinations, so students must carefully read the admission plans of the schools to know what methods and combinations the school they intend to apply to has," Master Tri noted.

FACTORS FOR BUILDING A COMBINATION OF SUBJECTS FOR ADMISSION EXAM

In 2025, Duy Tan University will use 4-6 combinations for each major, and each combination will consist of 3 subjects. "Depending on the training goals of each major, the school will determine what background knowledge is required for PhD input and what knowledge is needed for the future, from which the school will determine what combination of subjects is included," said Dr. Nguyen Phi Son.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance uses 6 subject combinations for each major, each combination consists of 3 subjects, in which literature is the main subject for all majors. Master Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, Director of the school's Information and Communication Center, shared: "Literature is the foundation subject to learn well knowledge related to theory, synthesis, evaluation, critical thinking, presentation... The school's training programs include majors in languages, economics, communications... so this foundation is very necessary. Besides, English is also very important. This is the basis for the school to determine the appropriate subject combinations for each major".

According to Master Truong Quang Tri, in 2025, Nguyen Tat Thanh University will focus on the specific characteristics of each major to decide which subject combinations to use. "For example, the natural science block needs math, physics, chemistry, and biology; while the social science block must have literature... The school also calculates the combination to both meet the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and be suitable for the subjects and exams of this year's candidates," Master Tri informed.

Meanwhile, Master Vo Ngoc Nhon, Deputy Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that this year the school will recruit 61 majors with a total of nearly 20 admission combinations. "Each major has 6 combinations and each combination has 3 subjects, with math or literature as the main subjects. These are also the 2 main exam subjects, so it is very convenient for students," Master Nhon said.

C CHOOSE SUBJECTS TO OPTIMIZE THE ADMISSION COMBINATION

Dr. Nguyen Phi Son believes that first, candidates must choose the major they love and are passionate about, then choose a university that offers that major. "You should see which subject combinations that school has for the major you want to apply for. When math or literature are two compulsory subjects in the admission combination, and are also two compulsory subjects, then for the two elective subjects, you need to determine which subjects appear most in the combination, and from there choose according to your strengths. Only then will you achieve high results and have a great chance of being admitted," Dr. Nguyen Phi Son advised.

Presenting two options for choosing a combination of subjects for admission, Master Truong Thi Ngoc Bich noted that candidates should choose the combination of subjects expected to have the best exam results and the safest combination of subjects. "That means you have to see if the subjects you are good at are suitable for the combination of the major you are considering at the school you want or not? If not, you have to choose a safe combination, including subjects that are not your best but have the ability to get good scores, or choose another safe method, for example, using the average score of grade 12, using the ability assessment test score...", Master Ngoc Bich said.

Master Truong Quang Tri also said that candidates must identify the subjects in which they are strong to optimize the use of the admission combination. "If you are strong in both math and English, you can choose D01 (math, literature, English) or A01 (math, physics, English) so that you will not be limited by the subjects in which you do not feel confident. In addition, you should consider the specific requirements of the major you choose. For example, general medicine requires biology, so you should focus on studying biology if you want to pass," Master Tri noted.

However, according to Master Vo Ngoc Nhon, for now, TS should focus on studying to achieve good results in grade 12, then achieve high results in the high school graduation exam because if the exam score is high, then the subject combination is no longer important, because the system will automatically take the highest score of the TS for consideration.

Does getting high scores in 3 subjects determine whether you will be good at university?

A student asked in the program: "I heard that studying at university is different from studying in high school, the subjects in the combination are the foundation. So if the 3 subjects in the combination have high scores, will it decide whether the student will study well in that major at university or not?"

Master Truong Thi Ngoc Bich affirmed that university study is very different from high school study in terms of methods, knowledge and problem-solving skills; and also different in terms of environment, geography, culture and lifestyle.

"If you are good at math, literature, and English in high school, this knowledge can supplement your studies at university in fields such as law, business administration, etc. However, not everyone who is good at the three subjects in the admission combination of that field can develop their studies at university, because there are differences in methods and thinking...", Master Bich commented.

Meanwhile, a student wondered if he could be considered for architecture if he didn't have a drawing score. Master Vo Ngoc Nhon informed: "Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology has majors in architecture, graphic design, fashion design, digital art... that consider drawing scores. Students can take the aptitude test organized by the school or use their aptitude scores at other universities to be considered for admission to the school. However, in addition to the combination with drawing, students can also use 5 other combinations that do not require drawing scores."

Regarding the question of whether the automotive engineering technology major can be considered without studying physics and chemistry, Dr. Nguyen Phi Son said that Duy Tan University has 6 combinations, of which 2 combinations do not have physics and chemistry (math, literature, English; math, English, computer science) can be considered for this major.

Master Truong Quang Tri noted that if PhDs have low biology scores, they should consider when applying for general medicine, because biology is an important subject in the admission combination, related to knowledge of the human body, pathology, and physiology.

"However, if you are passionate about general medicine, try to improve your biology. Or you can also consider your academic transcripts, but you need to ensure the quality threshold of the Ministry of Education and Training for this method," Master Tri advised.
