Ministry of Education and Training explains why studying semiconductor microchip requires a score of 8 in Math

NDO - In addition to the requirement of 3 admission subjects with a score of 24 points or higher, candidates who want to study semiconductor microchips need to achieve at least 8 points in Math.

At the Science and Technology Admissions Fair held on May 18 in Hanoi, students were asked why the Ministry of Education and Training requires candidates applying for the semiconductor microchip major to achieve a Math score of 8 or higher. In response to this question, Deputy Director of the Department of HigherEducation (Ministry of Education and Training) - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung said that the Ministry of Education and Training has just issued training program standards on semiconductor microchips at the undergraduate and master's levels.

Accordingly, the professional advisory board found that the basic knowledge for students to study well in semiconductor and STEM is especially related to Mathematics. Later, in the process of studying and working in the semiconductor industry, students will use Math knowledge a lot.

When surveying students' learning outcomes as well as evaluating training outcomes for students studying engineering and technology related to semiconductor microchips, the Ministry of Education and Training found that, in order to best develop their learning ability, students need to have a foundation of knowledge in Mathematics with a score of 8 or higher.

However, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung noted that students need to carefully study the regulations, because this training program standard only applies to schools participating in the program "Developing human resources for the semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2050" according to Decision No. 1017/QD-TTg dated September 21, 2024 of the Prime Minister . Schools that do not participate in the project will not be required to comply with this regulation. That means that these schools can still enroll students in the semiconductor industry with their own requirements, not necessarily achieving a Math score of 8 or higher.

On May 15, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the standard regulations on semiconductor microchip training at university and master's levels; applicable to universities participating in the program "Developing human resources for the semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2050" according to Decision No. 1017/QD-TTg dated September 21, 2024 of the Prime Minister.

Accordingly, candidates who want to study bachelor's or engineering programs in semiconductor microchips, if admitted based on high school graduation exam results, must use a combination of Math and at least one natural science subject suitable for the semiconductor microchip training program.

The total score of the subjects in the admission combination must reach at least 80% of the scale, for example, at least 24/30 for a combination of three subjects. In addition, the Math score must reach at least 80% of the scale, for example, at least 8/10.

For those who have a university degree, they must have a degree appropriate to the training program they are applying for and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.8/4 or higher. For students who are studying a different major and are transferring to the semiconductor microprocessor major at the time of consideration, they must have a GPA of 2.5/4 or higher.
