India's rice exports expected to rise over 10% in fiscal 2025-2026

India's rice exports are forecast to increase by over 10% in volume in the current fiscal (ending March 31, 2026), as demand from overseas markets continues to recover strongly.

In fiscal 2024-25, India exported 20.1 million tonnes of rice, worth $12.95 billion, to over 172 countries.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025, Abhishek Dev, Chairman of the Agricultural and Processed Produce Export Development Authority (APEDA), said: "Rice exports will continue to grow this year, with a double-digit increase in volume, and the export value will also increase."

APEDA is an agency under the Ministry of Commerce, responsible for promoting agricultural exports of India.

The two-day global rice conference, organized by the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) at Bharat Mandapam, began on October 30. APEDA provided technical and networking support to the event, but did not provide financial support.

Mr. Dev stressed that India needs to expand exports of not only traditional rice varieties but also processed rice products such as rice cakes and packaged foods.

The Government of India has identified 26 countries that currently import very small quantities of rice, including the Philippines, one of the markets seen as having great growth potential. The Government will therefore send trade promotion teams to these 26 countries to promote Indian rice varieties.

IREF Chairman Prem Garg said trade representatives of these countries have been invited to attend the conference where India showcased various rice varieties.

The event brings together about 10,000 delegates, including manufacturers, exporters, importers, policymakers, financial institutions, research institutes and logistics service providers.

According to the latest data, India's rice exports in September 2025 increased by 33.18% over the same period last year, reaching 925 million USD; and in the period from April to September this year, the total rice export turnover of this country reached 5.63 billion USD, up 10% over the same period last year.

As one of the world's largest rice producers and exporters, India supplies rice to over 172 countries, with an output of around 150 million tonnes in fiscal 2024-25 (ending March 2025), accounting for nearly 28% of the global total.

The country's average yield has also improved significantly, from 2.72 tonnes/ha in fiscal year 2014-2015 to about 3.2 tonnes/ha currently, thanks to new rice varieties, advanced farming techniques and expanded irrigation systems./.
