On August 21, specialist doctor Huynh Trong Tam, Head of the General Planning Department of Kien Giang General Hospital, said that the hospital had received two patients, B.D.L (41 years old) and TPB (46 years old), both fishermen on a fishing boat in the waters of Kien Giang.

Two fishermen were admitted to the hospital with convulsions, numbness in the tongue, numbness in the legs, headaches, and fatigue. Through medical history examination, it was found that these two patients and another person had drunk puffer fish. After eating, one fisherman on the same fishing boat died, the others were seriously ill, but were treated promptly and survived.

Previously, at around 5:00 p.m. on August 19, Mr. L, Mr. B, and Mr. NXH (Ha Tien City, Kien Giang) organized a drinking party on a fishing boat anchored offshore, in the Nam Du sea area.

At 7 p.m. the same day, the group stopped drinking. At around 1 a.m. on August 20, Mr. H had a seizure and later died. Mr. L and Mr. B also had difficulty breathing and had seizures. They were taken to the An Son Commune Health Station, Kien Hai District, and then transferred to the Kien Hai District Health Center for first aid.

Afterwards, both were transferred to Kien Giang General Hospital on August 20. After receiving timely first aid, the health of both fishermen has now stabilized and they are communicating better.

According to Dr. Huynh Trong Tam, in reality, there has not been any research on whether alcohol can increase toxicity when combined with some components in puffer fish. However, the signs of poisoning in patients are very consistent with the clinical symptoms of puffer fish poisoning.

In fact, people still use puffer fish as food, however, during processing, the liver or gallbladder can rupture, seeping into the fish's skin and flesh and causing poisoning.

In addition, along with some external factors when eaten with puffer fish, it can increase toxicity, so doctors recommend that people limit the use of unknown foods to ensure safety for themselves and their families.
