Phong Du Thuong: Stabilizing people's lives after natural disasters

The floods killed one person, affected 56 houses, and forced 152 households and 697 people in Cao Son, Khe Tau, Khe Det, Thuong Son, Ban Lung, Lang Than, Khe Mang, and Lang Chang villages to evacuate due to high risk of landslides and flash floods.

Floods on Hut stream caused large landslides, affecting the safety of houses of many households in Lang Chang village.

Floods on Hut stream and other streams damaged over 92 hectares of hybrid rice, corn, cinnamon, and nearly 3 hectares of ponds; swept away 371 livestock and poultry; and damaged many bridges, culverts, irrigation works, and electricity.

The total value of damage caused by floods in Phong Du Thuong is estimated at over 22.6 billion VND.

Floods swept away and deposited soil and sand on many areas of rice and crops.

Floods damaged the culverts on the road to Lang Than village and overflowed into Ban Lung village.

As soon as the disaster warning was issued, the Commune People's Committee activated a prevention plan, mobilizing all local forces, with the top priority being to ensure people's safety.

Accordingly, the commune mobilized 70 military officers, 18 police officers, and 50 members of unions to evacuate over 150 households to safety.

Mechanical vehicles such as excavators and cars were also mobilized to support rescue and recovery work.

Propaganda and warning work is carried out regularly through social networking channels such as Facebook and Zalo to update the situation and guide people in responding.

"The water in the stream rose quickly, and the commune authorities promptly evacuated my family and over 30 households in the village to a safe place," Ms. Tran Thi Thieu, Lang Chang village, recalled.

To soon stabilize people's lives, along with visiting, encouraging and supporting people to overcome the consequences of natural disasters, the project "Emergency evacuation of Phong Du Thuong commune in Lang Than village", with a resettlement scale for 80 households, has started construction.

"After the project is completed, high-risk households in the commune will have land to build houses and stabilize their lives," said Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee Hoang Van Khoa.

In addition, for more than 22 hectares of rice and 12 hectares of corn that were partially damaged, commune and village officials guided people to take care of and help harvest the remaining area, while encouraging the planting of short-term vegetables. For 28 hectares of rice that were severely damaged and fields covered with soil and rocks, the commune assessed the damage and made a plan to propose support.

The Commune People's Committee directed specialized staff to guide people in cleaning barns and ponds to prepare for the new production season. Environmental sanitation work was deployed, villages organized garbage collection, dredged sewers, and sprayed disinfectants to prevent and control epidemics after floods.

The People's Committee of Phong Du Thuong commune mobilized excavators to level large landslides on traffic routes; for small damaged areas, the villages mobilized people to fix them themselves. Thanks to that, although Phieng Hot iron bridge (Cao Son village), Go Vang bridge (Khe Mang village), Phieng Phay bridge (Lang Than village), Khe Nieng culvert (Thuong Son village) and Khe Tau village spillway were buried by rocks and soil, and had their mouths eroded, thanks to the quick repair, traffic in the commune was basically smooth.

People also urgently repaired the buried irrigation system and domestic water supply system to ensure daily life and agricultural production.

Machinery and equipment are mobilized to ensure traffic.

After the natural disaster, the lives of Phong Du Thuong people are gradually returning to normal. However, to completely overcome the consequences of floods cannot be done overnight because the damage to infrastructure and agricultural land is huge. Along with the efforts of the locality, Phong Du Ha hopes to continue to receive attention and support from all levels and sectors to help overcome the consequences so that people can soon stabilize their lives and develop production.
