Hope to soon implement 2 sessions/day

Immediately after General Secretary To Lam agreed on the policy that primary and secondary schools should organize two sessions per day depending on the conditions of each locality in terms of facilities, finance and teachers, with the implementation period starting from the 2025-2026 school year, many parents expressed their excitement that their children would have the opportunity to access strong innovation ineducation in a comprehensive direction, focusing more on culture, arts, skills training and health.

According to Mr. Nguyen The Anh, a parent at Giang Vo Secondary School (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi ), the model of studying 2 sessions/day at all levels of general education has been implemented in developed countries for a long time. "It is time for us to boldly change. We need to provide students with the best education, so that they can both learn knowledge and improve their skills. Studying 2 sessions/day also puts an end to the situation of extra teaching and learning, superficial teaching in class but active extra teaching like with some teachers today," Mr. The Anh shared.

It is known that for Giang Vo Secondary School, the next school year will also be the first year to implement 2 sessions/day for 6th graders. As a public school, teaching 2 sessions/day is not easy to implement due to many difficulties in terms of facilities, teaching staff and implementation costs. However, when implemented, parents and students clearly see the outstanding positive points compared to studying 1 session/day.

The 2-session/day model helps schools have more time to organize richer educational activities for students.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Canh, Head of the General Education Department, Department of Education and Training of Ninh Binh province, this locality has just piloted teaching 2 sessions/day. Previously, studying 6 sessions/week made students have to study on Saturdays, start school early and have to study until period 5 so they finish late. Meanwhile, implementing the model of 2 sessions/day, 5 days/week helps schools to stretch out the teaching plan, students can start school later, from around 7:30 instead of 7:00 as at present, reducing period 5. Studying the model of 2 sessions/day also helps schools have more time to organize more diverse educational activities for students. "The survey shows that parents are very supportive of implementing this model. Students have Saturday off, which is consistent with preschool and primary school and helps students have more time on the weekend with their relatives, making it easier for parents to arrange activities to strengthen family ties," said Mr. Canh.

Overcoming difficulties to teach 2 sessions/day

"The policy of teaching two sessions per day in primary and secondary schools needs to have a roadmap for step-by-step implementation, in which the state is the main investor and encourages socialization. Schools are not allowed to collect fees for teaching two sessions per day, while at the same time increasing the teaching of culture and arts, reducing pressure, ensuring comprehensive development of students. The Government is assigned to direct the Ministry of Education and Training, relevant ministries, branches, and localities to fully prepare conditions in terms of facilities, teachers, teaching programs, and educational activities for primary and secondary schools to teach two sessions per day, improve the quality of education, and implement from the 2025-2026 school year."

General Secretary To Lam

In Hanoi, the number of primary school students studying 2 sessions/day is nearly 100%, but at the secondary school level, this rate is low and varies between different districts. However, with the trend and requirements of the 2018 General Education Program, districts are making efforts to increase the rate of schools implementing 2 sessions/day. In Hoan Kiem district, an inner-city district facing many difficulties in facilities due to lack of school space, there are 7 secondary schools implementing 2 sessions/day with 100% of students.

In Ba Dinh district, only 55% of students in 13 secondary schools study 2 sessions/day. This rate in Hai Ba Trung district is about 50% of students. Cau Giay district only organizes 2 sessions/day for students in grades 6 and 7 of 7 secondary schools out of a total of 11 schools...

Preliminary statistics show that there are currently about 10 localities nationwide piloting the program for middle and high school students to study 5 days a week and have Saturday and Sunday off, including: Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Phu Tho (14 high schools and 22 middle schools), Ha Tinh city (Ha Tinh), Vinh city (Nghe An), Thanh Hoa city (Thanh Hoa), Nha Trang city (Khanh Hoa), Bac Ninh city (Bac Ninh)...

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong said that to organize well the teaching activities of 2 sessions/day, 3 factors must be met. Firstly, there must be enough facilities, 1 classroom per class, enough conditions for boarding students to stay and eat lunch at school. There must be enough playgrounds, practice grounds, physical education activities and other skills. Secondly, there must be enough teachers. Thirdly, there must be a teaching program and enough activities organized in 2 sessions, suitable for the psychology and physiology of the students' age.
