4 classic mistakes people often make when designing their own interiors.

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí22/09/2024

An ideal living space is not only a place to rest but also an expression of personal style and personality. However, mistakes in interior design can make your home less aesthetically pleasing, uncomfortable, and even cause serious long-term consequences.

Here are some classic interior design mistakes you should avoid from the start.

There is no clear vision.

This common mistake is often made by people who rush to change designs without a clear vision of the final outcome.

Most people design spaces by focusing on small details rather than approaching the overall picture. This results in inconsistencies and disharmony among the design elements.

Architects advise working with professionals to create a clear overall layout for your interior space. This serves as a guide for all subsequent choices, from colors and materials to design style. Anything you incorporate into the space must align with the overall vision.

Size error

Have you ever walked into a room and felt something was off, even though you couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was? It might just be a matter of scale.

Choosing furniture isn't simply about measuring to see if it fits; it's an art of arranging everything harmoniously and proportionally. A giant sofa next to a tiny coffee table, or a painting too small for a blank wall, can ruin the entire space.

Although there's no specific formula, experience shows that combining objects of vastly different sizes will make the space look unbalanced and aesthetically unappealing.

The advice here is to look at the big picture. Before buying any item, imagine how it will look alongside other items.

Trying to mix too many different styles

Combining different styles in interior design can create a unique and personalized living space. However, if not done skillfully, this can easily lead to chaos and imbalance.

When too many styles are incorporated into a single space, they compete for attention. This makes the room look cluttered and lacks a focal point. A modern sofa placed next to a classic cabinet, along with brightly colored patterns on the walls, can create a sense of inconsistency and disharmony.

Lack of contrast

Contrast isn't simply about the opposite of color, like black and white. It also encompasses differences in material, texture, shape, and light. A glossy black vase placed on a matte white wall will create a far more striking focal point than if it were placed on a darker wall.

Many people tend to choose neutral colors and simple designs, resulting in spaces lacking focal points. However, this doesn't mean you have to use overly bright colors or elaborate patterns.

An effective way to create contrast is to combine colors not only in black and white, but also in opposing colors on the color wheel. Or simply combine light and dark colors. Combining materials such as wood, metal, fabric, stone, etc., will create diversity and interest in the space.
