Decoding the Wood and Furniture Industry: High Salaries, Application of Modern Technology

(NLĐO) - Woodworking and furniture design is a "hot" major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education. Businesses are "thirsty" for manpower and continuously place orders for training from the university.

While many high-tech fields like robotics and artificial intelligence are attracting students with incredibly high admission scores, another lesser-known field of study is opening up promising job opportunities.

In recent years, this field of study has attracted a large number of female students.

Associate Professor Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, revealed that the wood and furniture engineering ngành has relatively easy entry requirements, wide-ranging job opportunities, and applies many technologies in the work process. In particular, this ngành attracts many female students passionate about design and technology.

"The newly merged Ho Chi Minh City currently has over 5,000 companies in the wood and furniture industry, with annual export value reaching tens of billions of dollars. The demand for engineering personnel is huge but there is a shortage, while the university can only train about 60 students each year," Associate Professor Vu said.

Contrary to popular belief, the salaries of engineers in the wood and furniture industry after graduation are extremely competitive, even higher than many of the currently "hot" information technology fields. Salaries range from 10-20 million VND per month for fresh graduates.

Gone are the days of skilled craftsmen meticulously carving and sculpting; wood and furniture engineers now work primarily on computers, designing furniture products using specialized software and employing high-tech CNC cutting machines to automate the production process.

The products were designed and manufactured by the students themselves.

The training program for this major goes beyond just woodworking knowledge, integrating a wide range of knowledge from mechanical engineering and interior architecture. Students will learn how to use CNC machines to process wood products automatically and efficiently; they will also learn how to design and create their own unique products, and more.

In recent years, the wood and furniture industry has gradually asserted its position as an important socio-economic sector of Vietnam, with wood and wood products becoming the sixth largest export sector in Vietnam.

According to Associate Professor Vu, the cutoff score for this major has remained stable at around 20-21 points for the A00 (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), A01 (Mathematics, Physics, English), and D00 (Mathematics, Literature, English) combinations in the last 3-4 years. This is an ideal score for candidates with average academic abilities, not exceptionally outstanding, but who still want to pursue a formal engineering field.
