Portrait of Sunnie Nguyen, the female student who is said to have mysteriously disappeared in Australia
According to information from Australia's 7News , 5 Vietnamese exchange students studying at Hamilton High School (Adelaide City) have "disappeared without a trace" at different times, one of whom has been uncontactable for more than 4 weeks.
Sunnie Nguyen (17 years old) is the latest case in the mysterious disappearance of Vietnamese international students, after she failed to return to her host family in South Plympton on January 8. The student's phone has been disconnected and her social media accounts have been deleted.
"I hope if she hears this, she will call and let me know she is okay," May Zervaas, Sunnie Nguyen's landlord, told a local television station. According to Ms Zervaas, the student is happy living in Adelaide and has no reason to run away or hide because her visa is still valid for the next three years.
Another Vietnamese student mysteriously disappears in Australia, local authorities take action
It's summer school holidays in Australia. "So I hope this is just a case of 17-year-olds wanting to get together and go somewhere without telling anyone," said Lien Nguyen-Navas, a spokeswoman for the Vietnamese Women's Association in Australia.
Responding to the Daily Telegraph , an Australian police spokesman informed that the Vietnamese teenagers were reported missing by their guardians in December 2023 and January 2024. "All current lines of inquiry indicate that some of the children may have traveled to other states and are still there. There is also no information to suggest that they are in danger," the spokesman said.
Australian authorities announced on January 11 that one of the missing Vietnamese students had been found. However, there are still four cases with no news. "We are working with the federal police to continue to locate them," a police spokesman added.
Australian police are also appealing for anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
