80 years of glory of Hong Lam land of learning

On the morning of November 15, Phan Dinh Phung High School (Ha Tinh) solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its founding (1945-2025) and received the First Class Labor Medal - a noble award recognizing the school's persistent contributions to the province's education cause.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of central and local ministries, departments and branches; leaders of Ha Tinh province; many generations of alumni and more than 1,800 students and teachers currently working and studying at the school. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Vice Chairwoman of Ha Tinh Provincial People's Committee, and Mr. Bui Nham Sam, Director of Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training, attended and congratulated.

Established right after the August Revolution in 1945, Phan Dinh Phung High School was the first high school in Ha Tinh, considered the “source of knowledge” of the Hong Lam learning land. At that time, Ha Tinh only had a relatively complete primary school system; the desire to build a formal high school was already simmering in the wishes of the people and the provincial government.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of central and local ministries, departments and branches.

In September 1945, implementing the Provincial Party Committee's directive, Mr. Phan Dang Tai, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Administrative Committee, together with Mr. Tran Hau Toan, Inspector of Primary Education (the predecessor of the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training), invited three teachers Nguyen Kim Mac, Phan Tu Long, and Dao Thuan to establish the school. Mr. Nguyen Kim Mac was trusted to hold the position of the first Principal.

The first opening ceremony took place in the joy of independence, simple but sacred. For the first time, Ha Tinh had a proper high school, opening the door to new education for the young generation.

The performances were elaborately staged by teachers and students of Phan Dinh Phung High School.

During the years of resistance against the French, then the Americans, Phan Dinh Phung and his students' classrooms were temporarily built on the edge of rice fields, in shelters; the blackboard was just a piece of painted wood, and chalk was scarce. But the sound of lectures and reading still resounded incessantly like an epic of will and belief.

Many teachers and students left the podium and entered the battlefield. Some returned in glory, while others remained forever on the fiery roads. They created the beautiful tradition of the school: “from the podium to the front line”.

After the restoration of peace , Phan Dinh Phung High School continued to affirm its position as the “cradle of human resource training and talent nurturing” of Ha Tinh. Through 79 courses with nearly 35,000 students, the school has contributed to training many generations of intellectuals, scientists, managers, military officers, artists... who have made important contributions to their homeland and country.

From the first generation to the 7x and 8x generations, many former students of Phan Dinh Phung have become prominent figures in the Vietnamese scientific and academic community; many hold important positions in Party, State, National Assembly and armed forces agencies.

That is a clear demonstration of the enduring vitality of the Hong Lam tradition of studiousness, and at the same time affirms the prestige of the school named after Doctor Phan Dinh Phung.

Since its establishment, Phan Dinh Phung High School has had 517 teachers, under the leadership of 18 generations of principals. Many teachers who grew up from this school have become shining examples of the industry, such as People's Teacher Tran Dinh Dan, former Principal, or People's Teacher Nguyen Tri Hiep, former Principal, former Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh.

The school currently has 104 staff and teachers, of which 35 are above standard; 51 are excellent teachers at the provincial level, 30 are emulation fighters at all levels. This is the core force in the process of innovating teaching methods, building a modern and humane educational environment.

The 2024-2025 school year - a pivotal year towards the 80th anniversary of the school's founding - despite teaching in difficult conditions with 2 campuses and 2 shifts, teachers and students still achieved many outstanding results.

In the field of excellent students, the school has 1 third prize in the national Literature subject, 83/96 students won provincial prizes (87%). In total, the whole school has 175 students winning prizes: 6 first prizes, 24 second prizes, 27 third prizes and 27 encouragement prizes - ranked 2nd in the province, only after Ha Tinh Specialized High School.

At the Provincial Science and Technology Competition, all 5/5 student projects won prizes, including 2 First prizes, 2 Second prizes and 1 Third prize.

The 2025 High School Graduation Exam recorded 100% of students passing, 97% being admitted to university; nearly 50% entering top schools nationwide.

Notably, this school year, 30 12th grade students were admitted to the Party, a rare number for a high school, demonstrating the maturity in ideals and mettle of the young generation.

With outstanding achievements, the school has been recognized as an Excellent Labor Collective for many consecutive years; received the Emulation Flag from the Government, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Provincial People's Committee. The school was honored to receive the Third Class Labor Medal (1967) and the First Class Labor Medal (1995, 2005, 2025).

From the early bamboo-thatched classes to the most modern school in Ha Tinh with nearly 1,700 students today, Phan Dinh Phung has completed a journey of nearly 80 glorious years.

Each generation of students of the school is contributing to affirming the position of Ha Tinh on the intellectual map of Vietnam. Today's achievements are a tribute to previous generations, at the same time conveying aspirations for the future, the aspiration to maintain the reputation of "the source of knowledge", the place where the sustainable flow of knowledge of the land of Hong Lam began.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Nam Thang, Principal of the school, shared: “The tradition of studiousness, courage and will to rise of previous generations has always been a valuable spiritual support. In the new era, teachers and students of the school are determined to innovate, create and integrate to be worthy of the long tradition, contributing to training high-quality human resources for the homeland and the country.”

On behalf of the provincial leaders, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Vice Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province, congratulated and commended the school's achievements, and hoped that Phan Dinh Phung High School would continue to promote its tradition, build an advanced educational environment, and become a bright spot of the Ha Tinh education sector in the new period.
