According to The Times of Israel, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that his country will comply with the Peace Treaty with Israel on the condition that the treaty remains "reciprocal".
Mr. Shoukry made the statement to deny unofficial reports that Cairo was considering suspending the peace agreement with Israel signed in 1979 because of recent developments in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Shoukry stressed that Egypt has maintained a peace treaty with Israel for the past 40 years and this is the foundation for diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Egypt's foreign minister said his country is working to promote a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to facilitate the exchange of detainees between the two sides and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, some sources said that Cairo had threatened to suspend the peace treaty if Israel expanded its attack on the city of Rafah on the border with Egypt. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry affirmed that Cairo strongly rejected Israel's intention to launch a military operation on Rafah, and called for the unification of all international and regional efforts to prevent this attack.
