Alcaraz scared with injury in round 1 of Japan Open

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz had a rocky debut at the 2025 Japan Open, overcoming both injury fears and weather disruption to win 6-4, 6-2 against Sebastian Baez.

With the score at 2-2 in the set, the Spanish player suddenly collapsed on the court and clutched his left ankle.

The moment he collapsed on the field, Alcaraz had to seek medical attention. It seemed that the injury would cause Alcaraz difficulty, but the 22-year-old tennis player's bravery spoke up.

Despite the match being suspended again due to rain, the six-time Grand Slam champion completely dominated his opponent, ending the match 2-0 (6-4, 6-2) after two sets.

After the match, Alcaraz admitted his anxiety after the match: "I was scared and I'm not going to lie. Honestly, when I landed on my ankle, the feeling at first was not good. I even thought about giving up because I couldn't move at that time."

"I'm happy that I was still able to compete after that and play such good tennis," Alcaraz added.

Alcaraz holds a record of 63 wins and seven titles in 2025, and he is aiming to join the prestigious "ATP No. 1 Club" if he wins in Tokyo. He will face Zizou Bergs in the round of 16.

In addition, at the China Open, Alcaraz's arch-rival Jannik Sinner (world number 2) made an impressive comeback after his defeat in the US Open final. He easily defeated Marin Cilic 2-0 (6-2, 6-2) as if confirming his readiness for the title race at the end of the season.
