The United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognized Italian cuisine as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This is a recognition of culinary traditions preserved through generations, and it also promises to boost the country's tourism industry.
Unlike previous titles awarded to individual dishes, this time UNESCO recognized the entire social customs and rituals surrounding Italian cooking and dining . These include family meals and the spirit of togetherness and sharing around the table.
Mirella Pozzoli (a tourist from Lombardy, Italy) said: "Sitting at the table with family and friends is something we cherish immensely. It's a tradition that strengthens community bonds and is hard to find anywhere else in the world."

Professor Pier Luigi Petrillo (who is in charge of the nomination dossier for Italian cuisine to UNESCO) said: "Italians cook to share their history and feelings with friends and family; to express love for others. In the nomination dossier, we describe Italian cuisine as a message of love."
With this new designation, Italy – already a world leader with 21 UNESCO World Heritage sites – promises to become even more attractive to tourists, not only for its architectural masterpieces, but also for its rich and welcoming culinary culture.
Among Italy's intangible cultural heritage is the art of Neapolitan pizza making. This makes it the first country to be recognized for its entire culinary tradition, rather than just a single tradition or recipe.
