Disabled farmer gets rich from his fields

Although he is only over 40 years old and disabled, he has accumulated a large fortune with 14 hectares of land specializing in rice and corn production and 2 hectares of cashew. In addition, he also owns many other valuable machinery serving agricultural production. This is something that not every farmer can do. His name is Nguyen Khac Dung, residing in village 3, Dong Kho commune, Tanh Linh district.

In the hot sun of April, Mr. Dung is still urgently operating the combine harvester to complete the harvest of the last rice fields of the 2022-2023 winter-spring crop for farmers. Looking at the way he skillfully operates the combine harvester on the rice fields full of rice, no one would think he is disabled (his right leg is amputated). Taking advantage of his lunch break, we started a conversation. Mr. Dung said: From Quang Nam province, he and his family came to Huy Khiem commune to start a business. In 2001, he got married, his wife is a teacher.

At first, the couple lived with their parents. After a while, they moved out and were given a small amount of farmland by their parents to work on. Gradually, thanks to hard work and saving, they bought a little more each year, and so the family's production area gradually increased. Being an active and perceptive person, he regularly updated, monitored, and invested in purchasing modern machinery such as plows, harvesters, and corn threshers to better serve production and meet people's needs. Like that, all year round, he roamed all over the fields. In previous years, he not only plowed and harvested in Dong Kho commune but also went to other localities such as La Ngau, Duc Binh... and whenever anyone called, he would come to work. Now, the family's area is also larger, so he only serves his family and local people. The family's business was very favorable, but in 2012, while planting corn, he had a work accident and broke his right leg. At that time, his spirit was very depressed and he almost collapsed. But thinking of his two young children, his wife alone could not handle all the housework. And thanks to the encouragement of his family, wife and children, along with the courage of a man who does not give up in the face of difficulties, he struggled to get up. Since being injured and having to wear a prosthetic leg, his health has also declined and he cannot do heavy work like before, so he has to choose suitable jobs and modern machines that are easy to control.

More than 10 years after the accident, Mr. Dung has overcome himself, continued to work and produce, developed the family economy , and become a good farmer and businessman at the Central level for many years, with a total income of over 800 million VND per year. In 2022, he was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the People's Committee of Tanh Linh district and the Provincial People's Committee at the Conference summarizing the 5-year movement of good farmers and businessmen (2017-2022).

Mr. Le Ba Tran Cong Dung, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dong Kho Commune, said: Mr. Nguyen Khac Dung not only takes care of developing his family's economy, but he and his family always strictly follow the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and regulations as well as the village and commune's regulations; fully participate in the obligations to the State as prescribed. Promoting the spirit of mutual love, every year his family supports gifts for poor households in the area on holidays and Tet; actively participates in the new rural construction movement in the locality. Every year, depending on the season, his family also creates jobs for 3-5 workers/season, helping them stabilize their income and improve their lives.
