Apple is currently lagging behind other competitors such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon in the generative AI race. The “bitten apple” still uses AI in its products but has not launched any generative AI products similar to ChatGPT or Google Bard. Instead, the American technology company’s AI is used to improve photography capabilities, automatically correct spelling mistakes, etc.
Apple will invest more heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) products. |
According to Bloomberg, Apple has so far developed its own large language model (LLM) framework called Ajax and the Apple GPT chatbot. However, they have not been included in any products.
Apple is looking to integrate AI into Siri, Messages, and Apple Music. With Apple Music, AI will be used to automatically create playlists, similar to what Spotify is doing with OpenAI. Additionally, AI could be used in Xcode to support software developers.
Apple's leaders leading the AI initiative are John Giannandrea, senior vice president (SVP) of machine learning and AI strategy; SVP of software engineering and Eddy Cue, and Craig Federighi, chief services officer.
In another report, analyst Ming Chi Kuo believes Apple will likely buy 2,000 to 3,000 servers this year and up to 20,000 next year. He said the servers will be equipped with Nvidia HGX H100 GPUs for generative AI training, and are expected to upgrade to B100 in 2024. Nvidia calls the H100 an AI supercomputing platform, with each chip costing around $250,000.
According to experts, Apple will install its own purchased servers to train large language models to improve security and privacy. The scale of its server purchases is still less than Meta and Microsoft. In addition, they also need to invest in labor costs, infrastructure, etc.
Kuo predicts that Apple will have to spend several billion dollars a year to catch up with its competitors. He himself worries about the future of Apple’s artificial intelligence business if the company only invests $1 billion a year, as Bloomberg reported.
