ASEAN and Japan agreed to continue strengthening cooperation to facilitate the region's recovery in the fields of trade and investment, digital economy , cybersecurity, tourism, etc.

According to a VNA correspondent in Jakarta, on June 6, at the 17th meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-Japan Joint Committee, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further promoting their partnership, marking 50 years of friendship and cooperation.

The meeting was co-chaired by Thailand's Permanent Representative to ASEAN Urawadee Sriphiromya and Japan's Ambassador to ASEAN Kiya Masahiko, with the participation of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN and the ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General for the Political- Security Community.

The meeting acknowledged the substantial progress in ASEAN-Japan cooperation over the past year through the effective implementation of the Plan for Revising the 2013 Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. All action programs in the Plan have been implemented with many programs and projects.

The two sides agreed to continue strengthening cooperation to facilitate the region's recovery in the areas of trade and investment, digital economy, cyber security, tourism, sustainable development, connectivity, smart cities, disaster management, environment and climate change, food security and energy security, public health , sports, people-to-people exchange, etc.

The meeting welcomed commemorative activities held this year to mark 50 years of friendship and cooperation, including the ASEAN-Japan Summit in December in Tokyo to set the direction for promoting bilateral cooperation in the future.

The two sides exchanged views on developments in ASEAN, Japan and regional issues. ASEAN welcomed Japan’s support for the bloc’s efforts in mainstreaming the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

The meeting welcomed the establishment of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) 3.0 with an initial contribution of up to 100 million USD from Japan to support projects and cooperation activities in the key areas of AOIP./.
