According to a VNA reporter in Singapore, on May 28-29, at Capella Singapore, the country's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) held Asia's leading technology conference "ATxSummit 2025."
The conference covered a wide range of topics, from artificial intelligence (AI) agents and embodied AI, satellites and space communications, to quantum computing and digital sustainability. A series of high-level sessions and workshops took place during the conference.
In her opening remarks, Ms Josephine Teo - Minister for Digital Development and Information, and Minister in charge of Smart Nation and Cybersecurity of Singapore - emphasized that the 5th edition of ATxSummit continues to be a platform to gather global technology leaders from governments , companies, research institutes and civil society, to discuss future technological innovations, the evolving industrial landscape and responses to both opportunities and challenges.
Through conferences like AtxSummit, Singapore is actively promoting the great benefits that science and technology innovation brings. Particularly in the field of AI, the Singapore Government is providing broad access and training in AI technology, strengthening core AI technical expertise in government agencies, promoting good governance and encouraging innovation, and applying AI to increase profits.
Highlighting Singapore’s AI achievements, Minister Teo announced that the Meralion 2.0 chatbot (short for Multimodal Empathetic Reasoning and Learning in One Network) can understand at least eight regional languages such as English, Mandarin, Tamil, Malay, Vietnamese, Thai, and Singlish—Singapore’s unique version of English that incorporates regional languages. Meralion can also detect emotional tones to enable more empathetic interactions with users.
“The chatbot can also process non-verbal cues such as the speaker’s volume, emotion, and tone. Furthermore, the latest version of Meralion understands sentences containing multiple languages, which is common in multicultural societies,” she said, adding that the Meralion chatbot can serve the needs of more than 450 million people in the region who speak these languages.
Meralion is a continuation of a large language model designed to reflect local cultures, namely AI Singapore's Southeast Asian Languages in a Network (Sea-Lion), which is trained on at least 11 major languages spoken in the region.
Ms Teo noted that the open-source Sea-Lion software has been installed more than 200,000 times, in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The interest in the regionally tailored model shows the need for a new AI program that can understand speech, text and other forms of communication.
At the event, Minister Teo also announced the Meralion Consortium comprising 12 member organisations, including DBS Bank, Grab, the Ministry of Health ’s Healthcare Transformation Office and ST Engineering.
The organization will work with Meralion developers to refine the AI model so that member companies can apply it in related fields.
As part of the conference, executives from major tech companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft and Google are scheduled to attend panel discussions on AI governance and innovation in the technology sector, addressing pressing issues in technology.
The AtxSummit 2025 event is expected to welcome about 3,500 people from all over the world./.
