Bac Kan strives to overcome the consequences of natural disasters

The heavy rain that lasted through the night of May 17 and early morning of May 18 caused flash floods and landslides in many localities in Bac Kan province, causing heavy losses in human lives and property. Immediately after the disaster, local Party committees, authorities, organizations and people focused on overcoming the consequences and stabilizing people's lives.

Ba Be, Cho Don, Ngan Son, Pac Nam, Bach Thong districts and Bac Kan city are the localities affected by this natural disaster. Up to now, floods have killed 4 people, injured 3 others (in Dong Phuc and Yen Duong communes of Ba Be district); 246 houses were damaged, mud and soil flooded in.

Regarding agriculture , nearly 400 hectares of rice and crops were buried and broken; over 16 hectares of aquaculture were affected. Along with that, many irrigation works and traffic infrastructure were eroded, swept away, buried... estimated damage of about 97 billion VND.

Immediately after the disaster, leaders of Bac Kan province were present at the scene to visit and encourage the affected families and direct the work of overcoming the consequences. From the provincial to the communal level, machinery and thousands of people including police, soldiers, militia, youth and people were mobilized to participate in overcoming the consequences of the disaster such as: cleaning up mud and soil that flooded into households' houses, supporting people to repair their houses; organizing cleaning, environmental sanitation, spraying disinfectants to prevent and fight epidemics; supporting the relocation of households out of dangerous areas to minimize damage to people and property; repairing traffic works to ensure smooth traffic, irrigation works to ensure production, electricity works, clean water to ensure people's lives, etc.

Mr. Ma The Thieu, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Acting Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Duong Commune, Ba Be District, Bac Kan: We have mobilized police, soldiers, and youth to search for victims, support the transportation of assets to safety; provide temporary food and drinking water to people; repair affected houses...

With the prompt intervention of authorities from the provincial to grassroots levels, up to now, after 5 days of the natural disaster, the work of overcoming the consequences in affected localities in Bac Kan province has achieved many results, people's lives have gradually stabilized.

Ms. Ma Thi Duong, in Tan Luot village, Dong Phuc commune, emotionally shared: After the flood, my house was flooded with mud more than a meter high. In the past few days, the forces have supported my family and other households to clean the mud out of the house and today my family has moved back in. I am truly grateful and touched by the attention of all levels, sectors and people in the village.

Mr. Ma Nong Quan, Secretary of the Dong Phuc Commune Party Committee, said: Up to now, the cut-off roads have been temporarily cleared, making it easier for people to travel. Households with severely damaged houses have been provided with temporary accommodation, food, drinking water and medicine. We are calling for help from benefactors to support families in repairing their houses as soon as possible; actively guiding people to restore production and convert crops to suit post-disaster conditions.

In the process of overcoming the consequences of floods, the government and affected people in Bac Kan province have received deep attention from all levels of government, organizations and business community of Thai Nguyen province. Thai Nguyen has organized many practical activities such as sending working groups to visit, encourage and provide support to people affected by floods; organizations and businesses also support cash, necessities and necessary items for people in flooded areas.

Ms. Do Thi Minh Hoa, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Chairwoman of the Bac Kan Provincial Fatherland Front Committee, shared: Many delegations have directly come to give gifts, cash and necessities to people affected by natural disasters. The Provincial Fatherland Front Committee and affected districts have also done a good job of receiving support from units, organizations, businesses and individuals inside and outside the province to support people in flood-hit areas. This cooperation is a great source of motivation for people to feel secure in stabilizing their lives and gradually rise up after the natural disaster.

Although there are still many difficulties ahead, with the synchronous and drastic participation of authorities at all levels, the consensus of the people and the cooperation of the community, Bac Kan is gradually overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, restoring production and stabilizing people's lives.
