Bac Kan: Fish found living in "death hole" where people fell into

As of June 4, authorities have not been able to find the victim who fell into the "death hole" in Bac Kan province due to very dangerous and strange signs.

As reported by SGGP Newspaper, from the end of March until now, in Hiep Luc village, Kim Lu commune (Na Ri district, Bac Kan province), at least 7 sinkholes have appeared with increasing diameter and depth.

Among them, there is a hole right on National Highway 3B (Bac Kan to Lang Son ). The entire area has had to urgently evacuate 21 households with 92 people. The Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Kan province has also declared a natural disaster emergency (from May 14), and at the same time, the dangerous area has been fenced off.

However, on the evening of May 26, an incident occurred in which a person riding a motorbike fell into a hole. The victim was Nguyen Duy Ph. (born in 1989), who was driving a motorbike through a road with a deep hole when he suddenly went missing.

Authorities have pumped water from the pit but have not been able to find the victim because the water in the pit continues to rise, the pit is unstable, the terrain is complex and there are potentially deep underground caves.

Chairman of Kim Lu Commune People's Committee, Mr. Truong Quang Trong, said that before the accident, the authorities had mobilized about 200m3 of rubble to dump into the hole to temporarily fill it. However, after only 1 night, all of these rocks disappeared without a trace. This phenomenon shows that the hole leads to a very deep and wide underground cave system.

According to information from Na Ri district, the sinkhole in the middle of National Highway 3B has a diameter of nearly 10m and after draining the water at a depth of 18m, the bottom is still undetermined. The bottom area is still slippery, with a "frog's jaw" below with a fairly large underground water source.

Mr. Dang Xuan Bach, an officer of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department (Bac Kan Provincial Police) - one of the people who directly went down to the pit to search - said that although they had reached the lowest water level, they could not determine how deep the bottom of the pit was. The rescue team did not find any trace of the victim, the vehicle, or any rocks in the nearly 200 cubic meters of rock that was dumped down 2 months ago to fill the pit.

The crater is getting wider and wider, there is a suspected underground cave and frog jaw below the sinkhole.

According to information from Bac Kan province, the strange thing is that while pumping water to find the victim, the authorities and local people also discovered live fish swimming in the hole. There is currently no official confirmation of the origin of the fish, but according to analysis by experts and feedback from local people, it is highly likely that the fish are natural fish living in the underground hydrological system. This reinforces the hypothesis that this area is located on a karst geological foundation (a system of limestone caves with underground water veins and complex underground flows).

According to geological scientists, the phenomenon of mass subsidence can be caused by a combination of many factors: the collapse of the karst cave system, the impact of geological faults, prolonged heavy rain, the load from the national highway, and may even be related to illegal gold mining activities in the past.

Currently, the authorities of Bac Kan province are continuing to monitor developments, conduct geological surveys in the area and deploy rescue measures. However, due to the high risk of the sinkhole expanding, the search for the missing victims is very difficult.
