AFP quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun as emphasizing that Washington's concerns about national security risks were "unfounded."
"Such actions hinder economic and trade cooperation between businesses... representing typical protectionism and economic coercion," Guo Jiakun stated, emphasizing that "China strongly opposes this."
Earlier on January 14, Washington issued new regulations banning Chinese and Russian technology from participating in the US automotive market. This restriction also prohibits the import of software and hardware if it is linked to Beijing or Moscow.
This regulation comes after Washington said this month it was considering new restrictions to address the risks posed by drones from adversaries such as Russia and China.
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated that modern vehicles incorporate numerous technologies such as cameras, microphones, GPS navigation systems, and other internet-connected features, making them not simply blocks of steel powered by engines, but also computers.
Explaining the new regulation, Ms. Raimondo said that Washington's purpose is to ensure that manufacturing technologies from rival countries do not enter the country.
In response, Guo Jiakun affirmed that China would take “necessary measures” to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
"What I want to say is that the U.S. has invoked national security reasons to restrict the use of Chinese software, hardware, and all connected vehicles in the U.S. without any factual basis," Guo Jiakun said at a press conference.
Therefore, spokesperson Guo Jiakun called on the US to end these actions and “stop the unreasonable repression” against its companies.
