According to the Guinness Book of Records, Ambati was once recognized as the youngest doctor in the world . Currently, he is a leading ophthalmologist working in the United States.

Graduating from high school at age 11, college at 13, and medical school at 17, Dr. Balamurali Ambati was recognized as the world's youngest doctor in 1995. He is currently the Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the Knight Campus of the University of Oregon (USA). He is also an ophthalmologist at the Pacific Clear Vision Institute and the president of a biotechnology company.

Since childhood, Ambati has been considered a "child prodigy, a medical academic superhuman". It is even reported that Ambati could do differential calculus at the age of 4.

Despite the accolades, the Indian-American physician remains humble, saying he has been blessed with many opportunities and that graduating from college so early is not his greatest achievement.

The doctor said his greatest achievement is seeing patients smile after surgery. "That's what makes me happiest, the best time of the week," he told EyeWorld.

Born in 1977, Ambati immigrated to the United States from India with his parents when he was three. He entered first grade at the right age, but then kept skipping grades, graduating from high school at the age of 11. “If I had gone the normal route, I think I would have been bored. I felt like I was on pace with math, science, English, and history,” the prodigy said.

In 1989, Ambati and her brother wrote the book AIDS: The True Story: A Comprehensive Guide to help students understand the disease that was spreading at the time. When the book was published, Ambati was 11 years old and her brother Jaya was 18.

“We saw a lot of discrimination against AIDS patients, they were chased out of town, their houses were burned down. We wanted to do something toeducate the younger generation, to dispel the misconceptions surrounding the disease,” the author explained.

After two years, Ambati graduated from New York University, then enrolled in medical school.

The prodigy's educational journey encountered many obstacles when schools were concerned about Ambati's young age, but he eventually graduated from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1999, just before his 18th birthday.

After completing a three-year residency in internal medicine and ophthalmology, Ambati began practicing medicine while continuing his research and earning his doctorate.

In 2006, Dr. Ambati again collaborated with his brother, a retina specialist at the University of Kentucky, to study corneal angiogenesis.

In 2008, he joined the Moran Eye Center, performing thousands of cataract surgeries and other vision correction procedures. He was named one of The Ophthalmologist magazine's 100 Most Powerful Ophthalmologists.

During his career, Dr. Ambati has been honored many times such as receiving the Ludwig von Sallmann Clinical Scientist Award, the Troutman-Véronneau Award from the American Ophthalmological Association, the IRDS Award...
