Discuss solutions to restore and improve the health of rice-growing soil

(CTO) - On October 29, the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers in collaboration with the Vietnam Rice Industry Association and the Agriculture and Environment Newspaper organized the forum "Healthy rice soil - Foundation for green and sustainable development". The forum was held in Hanoi and was connected online with many points across the country.

Can Tho City farmers apply mechanization to bury straw combined with treating straw in the field with biological products to improve soil and increase production efficiency.

The country has about 3.9 million hectares of rice land. In recent times, the rice cultivation area has decreased but rice productivity has continuously increased, firmly ensuring national food security and providing a large amount of rice for export. However, the impact of climate change is increasing, along with high-level rice intensification and unreasonable use of agricultural materials, causing rice land to degrade, many areas of land to become acidic and poor in nutrients... Therefore, preserving, restoring and improving the health of rice land is becoming urgent. In particular, restoring soil fertility is a very important issue, helping to positively impact both physical and chemical properties and the ecosystem in the soil, ensuring the foundation for sustainable development in the future.

At the forum, specialized agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, together with localities, institutes, schools and related units, updated and assessed the current status of rice soil health in Vietnam, provided information on soil-nutrient maps and rice cultivation management, varieties and nutrients. Shared models, solutions and good practices to improve and enhance soil health and manage and sustainably use rice soil resources, especially in the Mekong Delta - the key rice growing region of the country.

Delegates also proposed many solutions to improve the management and health of rice-growing soil; promote the application of science and technology and link green and sustainable production chains. Many delegates recommended that functional levels and sectors need to build a soil quality database and develop a rice soil health assessment scale to have appropriate solutions for each region. Strengthen information and propaganda for farmers and the community to understand soil health issues. Instruct people to manage water properly, apply balanced fertilizers, increase the use of organic fertilizers, rotate between rice and suitable crops, and cultivate rice smartly to adapt to climate change.
