At this time, although only half of the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year has passed, teachers and students in many localities are already busy reviewing for the high school graduation exam.
This is the first year of testing and enrollment according to the new 2018 GeneralEducation Program (GEP) with 2 new subjects, so students inevitably have concerns about choosing exam review groups.
Previously, in mid-October, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the reference exam for the 2025 high school graduation exam. According to experts, the 2025 high school graduation exam has strong differentiation. In particular, math teachers have a common opinion that the reference math exam is good, but this exam is inconsistent with the goals and objectives previously set by the Ministry.
When changing the name from the "2 in 1" national high school exam to the high school graduation exam, the Ministry of Education and Training has identified the requirement to ensure accurate, objective, and reliable results for considering high school graduation recognition, providing information for assessing the quality of general education and as one of the bases for university and college admissions. If we look at this goal, from the reference questions, it can be affirmed that the average score for Math in 2025 will decrease because the exam questions are strongly differentiated. The question now is whether the main goal of the Ministry of Education and Training in organizing the 2025 exam is to consider high school graduation or university admission?
Currently, schools have developed plans to organize teaching and review for students, preparing for the 2025 high school graduation exam according to new requirements. At this time, the concern of both parents and students is how the admission methods and combinations of universities will change, when in the first year, some elective subjects become high school graduation exam subjects.
According to the plan for organizing exams and considering recognition of high school graduation from 2025 announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, candidates will take 4 subjects including 2 compulsory subjects (Literature, Mathematics) and 2 elective subjects from the following subjects: Foreign Language, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology. Thus, candidates will have 36 ways to choose high school graduation exam subjects. However, this diversity causes more or less difficulties in arranging and organizing teaching at school, especially reviewing for students.
Notably, the number of students registering for review for the two new subjects, Information Technology and Technology, is very low. If separate review classes are organized for these subjects, the small number of students will make it difficult and ineffective to arrange teachers and schedules. On the other hand, if not organized, students will not have the opportunity to review thoroughly, affecting their preparation for the upcoming graduation exam. This reality requires schools to find flexible solutions that both ensure effective support for students and meet the requirements of the 2025 high school graduation exam.
In reality, even in Hanoi, there are schools with only a few dozen 12th graders choosing Technology as their graduation exam subject. The number of students who wish to use Technology exam scores for university admission is not much. The reason given by students is that they do not know which subject combinations will include Technology, and whether the training majors they want to study use Technology combinations for admission or not. Only by answering these questions will students be bold enough to study and take the Technology exam to get university admission scores.
While Technology is the subject that most clearly demonstrates STEM education, in line with career trends. However, currently, few universities use admission combinations that include Technology. This is a difficulty, affecting students' choices, and is also a concern for teachers of Technology. According to high school teachers, in order for students to boldly choose this subject in the High School Graduation Exam, universities need to have more admission combinations that include Technology, especially in technical majors.
According to experts, 2024-2025 is the first year that students can choose high school graduation exam subjects to get university and college admission results, so they need to be carefully advised and oriented, avoid choosing based on emotions and the majority because this will affect their choice of major/career in the future.
