Before FIFA announced the appeal result, the Capital de Noticias (Argentina) newspaper dealt another blow to Malaysia's football ambitions when it released more evidence showing that the grandfather of midfielder Facundo Garces, Carlos Rogelio Fernandez, was born in Argentina and also had an Argentine mother. That means that Facundo Garces has no Argentine ancestry whatsoever.

“A large-scale FIFA investigation has exposed fraudulent acts in the birth records of several players who play for the Malaysian national team, including two Argentinians, Facundo Garces and Imanol Machuca. According to documents obtained by Capital de Noticias, the birth certificates used to prove their Malaysian origin were falsified,” the Argentine newspaper stressed.
The newspaper continued to prove Facundo Garces's origin: "The case of Facundo Garces is a typical example. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed that his grandfather, Carlos Rogelio Fernandez, was born on May 29, 1930, on Penang Island (Malaysia). However, a copy of the original birth certificate provided to FIFA by the Civil Registry of Santa Fe Province (Argentina) proves the opposite: Mr. Fernandez was born in Villa Maria Selva, Santa Fe City, more than 14,000km away from Malaysia.
The date of birth is real, but the place of birth is completely faked. The document clearly states: “Dona Sebastiana Justa Fernandez (Facundo Garces’ great-grandmother), 26 years old, Argentinean, residing in Villa Maria Selva, gave birth to a boy at her home at 6:30 p.m. on May 29, 1930.” In other words, Mr. Fernandez’s mother, who is also Facundo Garces’ great-grandmother, is Argentinean, and has no Malaysian ancestry as FAM claimed.

Documents show that Facundo Garces' grandfather was born in Argentina (Photo: CDN).
At that time, the streets north of the Salvador del Carril neighborhood in Santa Fe were still numbered rather than named. “Route 22,” where Mr. Fernandez was born, is now Gorostiaga Street.
The birth certificate also listed the name of Don Cipriano Garces, who later became Sebastiana’s husband, as a Spanish businessman. Thus, neither of Facundo Garces’s paternal nor maternal sides had any connection with Malaysia.”
Also in the documents obtained by Capital de Noticias, the player Imanol Machuca, whose grandmother was declared by FAM to be born in Penang, is actually 100% Argentinian. His grandmother was identified as being born in the town of Roldan, Santa Fe province (Argentina).
Along with Facundo Garces and Imanol Machuca, five other naturalized Malaysian players were also found by FIFA to have falsified their documents, namely Rodrigo Holgado (Argentina), Jon Irazábal Iraurgui and Gabriel Arrocha (Spain), João Vitor Brandão Figueiredo (Brazil) and Hector Alejandro Hevel Serrano (Netherlands). All were banned from international competition for one year.
