Last month, authorities on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, received a call from a man who claimed he had shot a woman and threatened to harm himself at her home, according to a Reuters report released today.
The filing also states that the information was reported on December 30, 2023, on Kiawah Island, an affluent community of about 2,000 people.

After checking, local security officials determined that this was a hoax because Ms. Haley was not on the island at the time the police received the call. At that time, she was with her son elsewhere.
Ms. Haley's campaign team declined to comment on the above information.
The incident is part of a wave of violent threats and bomb threats targeting government officials, members of the judiciary and election administrators since the 2020 election, according to USA Today.

The hoaxes have escalated over the past two months, targeting both allies and opponents of former US President Donald Trump as he attempts to return to the White House. The targets have included figures who have publicly opposed Mr. Trump, including judges and at least one prosecutor who handled the charges against him.
Additionally, some supporters of former President Trump have also been the target of scare tactics.
The incidents are under investigation. In an email to Reuters, an FBI official in South Carolina said federal agents were looking into the scam calls and intended to conduct a “threat assessment” on the matter.
Law enforcement agencies have not yet publicly identified the suspect who targeted Ms. Haley or other senior officials.
Reuters has documented at least 27 incidents of intimidation targeting politicians , prosecutors, election officials and judges since November 2023.
