Arrested 2 captains illegally leaving the country to fish abroad

Due to low catches, Su Thanh Hoai and Nguyen Van Nhan took their boat and fishermen to Indonesian waters to fish illegally for 6 days. Then Nhan's boat broke down and had to return to Vietnam for repairs and was arrested by the Coast Guard.

On October 29, the An Giang Provincial Police Department's Security Investigation Agency announced that it had issued a decision to prosecute the case, prosecute the accused and execute an order to temporarily detain the accused Su Thanh Hoai (49 years old) and Nguyen Van Nhan (48 years old, both residing in Rach Gia ward, An Giang province) to investigate the act of organizing illegal exit for others.

The investigation agency determined that the defendant Su Thanh Hoai was the captain of fishing boat KG-96103-TS, and the defendant Nguyen Van Nhan was the captain of fishing boat KG-94781-TS.

On February 6, the defendants Hoai and Nhan took the two fishing boats and a number of fishermen from Tac Cau port (Binh An commune, An Giang province) to Ca Mau sea to catch seafood.

However, due to low catches, both sides discussed and agreed to send ships and fishermen to foreign waters to catch seafood.

Upon arriving at the Vietnam-Indonesia border area, the two suspects instructed fishermen to attach fake license plates to the boat and turn off the tracking device, then steer the boat to Indonesian waters to exploit seafood to avoid detection by authorities.

During the operation in Indonesian waters (about 6 days), Nhan's ship broke down, so Hoai used his ship to tow Nhan's fishing boat KG-94781-TS back to Vietnam for repairs. When arriving in Vietnamese waters, both ships were discovered by the Coast Guard Region 4 and brought to headquarters for work.

The case was then transferred to the Security Investigation Agency of An Giang Provincial Police for investigation according to authority.

An Giang Provincial Police recommends that fishermen raise awareness, understand clearly, voluntarily and strictly comply with legal regulations in the process of exploiting and catching seafood, especially implementing well the recommendations of the European Commission (EC) to join hands to protect sovereignty , develop the economy, and contribute to removing the EC's yellow card for our country's seafood industry.
