Surprise "Foreign gold nugget" with revenue of over 60 billion VND

“Ngoai’s Gold” is a movie that was little noticed before its release, but is currently holding the first position in the box office revenue chart, and has surpassed the 60 billion VND mark. The movie is considered a surprise at the box office, when currently Vietnamese movies are competing fiercely in theaters with 6 Vietnamese movies and 1 Vietnamese-Korean co-production movie.

The movie “Grandma’s Gold” is a family psychological film, taking the theme of grandmother-grandchild love as the focus to develop the emotional levels of joy, anger, love, and happiness in the journey of growing up of the little grandchild who was protected by his grandmother from infancy to adulthood. Mrs. Hau - a woman who has worked hard all her life, now becomes the sole support of her grandchild when her daughter left. Although life is still full of hardships, the love she has for her grandchild is always complete. To her, her grandchild is her “gold” - joy, comfort, and also the reason for her life.

The film not only delicately depicts through small details and actions in the film, but also cleverly makes the audience witness the small village where two grandmothers take care of their children and grandchildren, how they face and overcome the storms of life. At the same time, it emphasizes the sacred value of emotions, behavior, as well as the hesitation and shyness when expressing love between generations.

Released on October 17, "Ngoai's Gold" by director Khuong Ngoc quickly created a strong effect at the box office, earning more than 60 billion VND after just over a week of showing, becoming one of the three highest-grossing Vietnamese films this fall.

This is considered a surprise because previously, "Foreign Gold" did not receive much attention, while there were 6 Vietnamese films and 1 Korean-Vietnamese co-production film shown in theaters, and all were highly rated, "heavyweight" or mentioned a lot by the public, such as "Tử Chi trên không", "Cải ma", "Nhà gò xo", "Chi nga em nang", concert film "To quoc trong tim" and co-production film "Tay anh gi mot sao".

Director Khuong Ngoc has always been known as a perfectionist and has a very unique visual taste in each frame. With “Grandma’s Gold”, he spent nearly a month wandering around Saigon in the midday sun, just to find a space that carries the “soul” of the old city where every corner of the house and every wall can tell a story.

“I wanted a real Saigon house, so I ran everywhere every day. It wasn’t until the last day that I found one that was disguised as a coffee shop. When I scraped off the new wall, the old wall appeared inside, just like an old house. At that moment, I knew I had ‘struck gold’. The three adjacent houses there coincidentally reflected the personalities of the three main characters, so I kept them intact and restored them. The furniture was all real, taken from the surrounding houses, and they were old, so they looked very real. The whole neighborhood was full of elderly people, quiet and friendly, which helped the film crew film smoothly. I felt very lucky to have found this setting,” director Khuong Ngoc revealed.

The film reunites the well-matched duo Viet Huong and Le Khanh after the film “Chi Dau” also directed by Khuong Ngoc. Both are comedic faces, especially Le Khanh, when her appearance in each artistic product makes the audience think of humor or comedic characters. However, Le Khanh said that her role as Diem has its own story and tragedies. Le Khanh has portrayed the image of a character who only cares about her own interests, abandons responsibility, and abandons her loved ones…

The film is also the reunion of Viet Huong and Hong Dao after “Sister-in-law”. In contrast to the fierce confrontation in “Sister-in-law”, in “Grandma’s Gold”, Hong Dao and Viet Huong become two mothers who love each other very much, as Viet Huong shared: “If in the previous film, the two mothers in the previous film were “thorns” with each other, in their eyes and not in their words, then in this film, the two sisters love each other very much. Love is also in every look”.

As director Khuong Ngoc shared: "We will see actors Viet Huong, Hong Dao, and Le Khanh in 'Ngoai's Gold' have very different identities from the previous project."

The film also marks the return of actress Bang Di after two years of absence from the big screen.

Bang Di's role is a challenging one, a character with a lot of trauma and heavy psychology. The actress admitted that this is the role that haunted her the most in her career, to the point that it took her many days to escape the character's emotions.

“In over 10 years of working in the profession, this is the first time Di has felt a role so heavy and tiring. After a whole month of filming, Di felt like her energy was being drained because she was haunted by the character, always heavy and unhappy. Normally, Di would talk and joke with everyone in the crew, but only for the first few days. After that, after filming, Di would sit in a corner, no longer having any energy to talk. After the film ended, Di had to spend about one to two weeks to find a way to 'get out of character' and regain balance. It was a memory that was both extreme and memorable. It was tiring, but Di felt lucky to be able to live fully with that role,” the actress shared.

The movie “Ngoai’s Gold Nugget” produced by 856 Pictures, V Pictures and distributed by CJ CGV is currently showing in all cinemas nationwide. The actors and crew have just completed promotional tours in the Western region.

Currently, the film is at a revenue of 64 billion VND, holding the top position in the box office rankings. However, the growth rate is slowing down and will continue to slow down when next month there are more famous Vietnamese films released at the box office, such as “House of Two Owners”, “Quan Ky Nam”, “Pha Dang: Sinh Banh Me”, “Trai Tim Que Quat”… If it maintains the growth rate, “Cuc Vang Cua Ngoai” hopes to be the second film by director Khuong Ngoc to enter the Top films with revenue of 100 billion VND, after “Chi Dau”.
