In the past, a warm meal with smoke from a wood stove was the center of family bonding, but now, many people eat alone in front of a computer screen. A shared meal has gradually become a "luxury" when the hustle and bustle of work and study makes it rare for parents and children to sit together.
In the fast pace of life, the meal becomes a "pause". A complete meal can heal emotions after fatigue, reminding each member that: even if there is a storm outside, there is still a warm place to return to.
The family meal is also a place to "wrap up" Vietnamese cultural values. From the neat and balanced arrangement; to the culinary philosophy of "yin and yang and the five elements" expressed in each dish. A meal with enough vegetables - fish - meat, full of sour, spicy, salty and sweet flavors, is a testament to the ingenuity, sophistication and thrift of the Vietnamese people.
Ms. Hong Ngoc (35 years old, from Hanoi ) shared : "In the past, at around 6 pm, my whole family would gather around the dinner table, no one needed to remind them. Now that the children are grown, one is going to extra classes, the other is busy with work, many days it's just my husband and I eating together. Only then did I realize that the dinner table is not just for eating, but is an excuse for the family to sit together, ask questions and share."
She said that there were days when she quickly cooked a few simple dishes, but when her children came home late, the atmosphere in the house was still different: "Just having laughter, having someone pick up a piece of fish for each other, naturally all the fatigue was lighter. I think, keeping the dinner table together is also keeping the family tradition."
From Ngoc’s confession, we can see that although the family meal is small, it has a profound meaning: it nourishes both the body and the spirit. And it is from these simple meals that Vietnamese people have created a unique culture, both familiar and sacred.
