Girls who use antibiotics within the first 12 months are at higher risk of early puberty

Girls who were prescribed antibiotics before 3 months of age were 33% more likely to have precocious puberty, increasing to 40% if they were given antibiotics within the first 14 days of life.

According to the results of a new study published by Korean scientists , girls who are given antibiotics within the first 12 months of life are at risk of puberty earlier than normal.

The team analyzed data on antibiotic consumption of 322,731 infants and children under 12 months old in South Korea, and followed them until the girls were 9 years old and the boys were 10 years old.

The results showed that girls who were prescribed antibiotics before 3 months of age were 33% more likely to have early puberty, increasing to 40% if the patient was given antibiotics within the first 14 days of life.

Additionally, girls who used five or more antibiotics had a 22% higher risk of developing precocious puberty than girls who used two or fewer antibiotics. This suggests that the earlier and more frequently a child is exposed to antibiotics, the higher the risk of precocious puberty.

However, in boys, the team found no link between antibiotics and early puberty.

Speaking to the academic community, Professor Choi Yoon Soo said previous studies have also shown that exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of early puberty. This supports the hypothesis that early factors affecting the gut microbiota or endocrine metabolism can accelerate puberty in children.

New research supports that hypothesis once again, so doctors and parents need to carefully consider the long-term effects of antibiotics when prescribing them to young children.

Precocious puberty, also known as true precocious puberty (CPP), refers to girls starting puberty before age 8 and boys before age 9. It occurs more often in girls and the exact cause is unknown.

The study was published at the joint scientific conference of the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 10./.
