On December 2, Hung Vuong Hospital announced that it had just admitted a 63-year-old patient (living in Tien Giang ) with an ovarian abscess and severe infection. Before that, the patient felt a slight pain in the abdomen, the pain gradually increased to the point of being unbearable. On the afternoon of November 30, the patient's family took the patient to Hung Vuong Hospital for emergency care in a lethargic state.
At the hospital's Emergency Department, the patient's heart rate was very fast, and the doctor had to give him oxygen through a mask. The patient showed signs of a serious infection. An ultrasound later showed multiple abscesses in the abdomen, warning signs of peritonitis and severe sepsis, requiring immediate surgery.
Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Huynh Nguyen Khanh Trang, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hung Vuong Hospital, said that in the face of the urgent situation, the team immediately initiated a treatment plan that night. The surgical team included doctors from Hung Vuong Hospital, in addition to the coordination of doctors from Cho Ray Hospital.
The surgery lasted more than 4 hours. Doctors from the two hospitals discovered nearly 2 liters of thick, green pus in the patient's abdominal cavity, very smelly. The left ovary and fallopian tube were 15cm dilated, filled with thick pus, stuck to the end of the large intestine.
Doctors performed a dissection and cut out the entire abscess and discovered a 3.5cm long fish bone that had pierced the intestines and entered the abdominal cavity like a thorn. After removing the fish bone, the patient continued to have a severe infection due to a long-standing intestinal perforation and severe diffuse peritonitis, so he was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for further treatment of the intestinal injury.
By the morning of December 2, the patient's health condition had gradually stabilized.
According to the doctors in the treatment team, the case is very rare, however, the case of a bone fragment stuck in the throat puncturing internal organs is not an isolated case. Many patients always think of swallowing a fish bone when it is stuck in the throat, however, a fish bone stuck in the abdominal cavity is a huge potential danger, which can perforate the stomach, endangering life.
Doctors recommend that people should not try to swallow rice, drink water, or drink vinegar when a fish bone is stuck in their throat, and should go to the hospital for professional treatment.
