Untold secrets about the super aircraft carrier USS Nimitz

With a length of more than 300m, a power of 250,000 horsepower and two nuclear reactors, the USS Nimitz is still the pride of the US Navy.

According to the US Navy, the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the first aircraft carrier of the US Navy's Nimitz class and one of the largest warships ever built. It is also the second US aircraft carrier to operate on nuclear power, following the legendary USS Enterprise.

The aircraft carrier was laid down on June 22, 1968, at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dock Company in Virginia. The name Nimitz was given in honor of Admiral Chester William Nimitz Sr., Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. After many years of construction and testing, the ship was officially handed over to the US Navy in 1975.

With a length of about 332m and a displacement of nearly 100,000 tons, the USS Nimitz is considered one of the symbols of modern naval power. The ship can carry more than 60 aircraft of various types, along with a crew and marines of up to 5,000 people. Two nuclear reactors with a capacity of more than 250,000 horsepower provide energy for the entire operation, helping the ship reach a maximum speed of over 30 nautical miles/hour.

Thanks to its nuclear power, the USS Nimitz has a virtually unlimited range and a lifespan measured in decades rather than miles. The ship does not need to carry much fuel, which frees up space for fuel for aircraft, weapons and logistics. The abundant electrical system also helps operate sophisticated electronic equipment such as radar, combat command systems and steam catapults to support the launch of heavy aircraft.

USS Nimitz is equipped with many modern sensor and weapon systems such as surveillance radar, electronic warfare system, Sea Sparrow missiles, Rolling Airframe, Phalanx close-in defense guns and Browning machine guns.

In terms of logistics, the USS Nimitz operates as a floating city in the middle of the ocean, capable of providing 18,000-20,000 meals a day. The ship has two barber shops that serve about 1,500 haircuts a week, along with a 90-day food storage area. The ship's post office handles more than 500,000 kg of mail a year.

The medical facility includes 80 beds, a dental clinic with five dentists and six physicians, including a surgeon. In addition, the Nimitz's water purification system can produce up to 400,000 gallons of fresh water per day, providing water for domestic use, jet propulsion systems and aircraft catapults.
