Building ginseng brand from high quality raw material area

Lai Chau promotes the building of the "Lai Chau Ginseng" brand, developing synchronously from planting areas, processing to consumption, aiming to become a high-quality medicinal herb center of the North.

Not only growing ginseng to escape poverty, Lai Chau is transforming strongly with a methodical strategy to build the brand "Lai Chau Ginseng", developing the value chain from seeds, planting, processing to trade promotion , aiming to become the center of high-quality medicinal herbs in the North.

Synchronous support policy, developing value chain linkage

With an altitude of 1,200 - 1,800 m, cool climate, high humidity and rich forest land, Lai Chau has ideal natural conditions for growing ginseng. Ginseng here grows strongly, has stable medicinal properties, and high saponin content is a decisive factor in the quality of medicinal herbs.

Taking advantage of this, Lai Chau province has planned hundreds of hectares of forest land in Sin Ho, Phong Tho, Tan Uyen and Tam Duong to develop concentrated ginseng areas. From precious natural genetic resources, the province has researched, selected and propagated "Lai Chau Ginseng", a typical medicinal brand, positioned as a national key product of the medicinal group.

Experts assess that Lai Chau has the potential to become the "ginseng capital" of the North if it continues to receive systematic and sustainable investment, similar to the Ngoc Linh ginseng model in Kon Tum .

Identifying ginseng as a "rich plant" and a pillar in the development of ecological agriculture , Lai Chau authorities have implemented a series of policies to support people, from providing seeds, technical guidance, preferential loans, to product consumption through linkage models.

Enterprises provide seeds and commit to purchasing products; people are responsible for planting and caring for them according to GACP-WHO procedures; the State invests in infrastructure, allocates forest land, opens roads, electricity and water to growing areas; and research institutes ensure seed quality, control pharmaceutical substances and provide technology support.

Thanks to this model, hundreds of households in Lai Chau have had stable livelihoods, with incomes 2-3 times higher than before. Ginseng not only brings economic benefits but also contributes to increasing forest cover, improving soil, and protecting water resources in the spirit of "using forests for livelihood".

Not stopping at growing raw materials, Lai Chau is aiming to develop deep processing industry to increase product value. Enterprises in the province have begun to invest in modern production lines, producing ginseng extract, ginseng tea, capsules, ginseng wine and cosmetics extracted from ginseng essence.

It is estimated that the value of processed products can be 5-7 times higher than that of raw products. This is the key direction to help “Lai Chau Ginseng” build a competitive position in the domestic and international medicinal market.

In parallel, activities to trace the origin and promote the brand "Lai Chau Ginseng - the quintessence of the Northwest mountains and forests" are being implemented, contributing to bringing the product to the national and international markets.

Along with that, the province promotes geographical indication registration, builds an electronic traceability system, promotes brands through national medicinal fairs, OCOP programs, e-commerce platforms and eco-tourism experiences "Lai Chau ginseng road".

Each household and each cooperative is encouraged to become a “brand ambassador” directly displaying, introducing and selling medicinal products right in the garden. This not only creates a livelihood but also spreads the image of a green, clean and sustainable ginseng region.

Towards the medicinal center of the North

Currently, Lai Chau province has developed more than 200 hectares of ginseng, many of which meet GACP-WHO standards. The province aims to establish a large-scale ginseng production area by 2030, with a processing plant, a seed research center, and a medicinal tourism area associated with the community.

Local authorities are also promoting cooperation with research institutes and domestic and foreign pharmaceutical enterprises to expand growing areas, standardize processes and expand export markets.

Lai Chau ginseng is not only a medicinal plant, but also a brand and symbol of green economic development, in harmony between human and natural benefits.

With a brand development strategy linked to the value chain from cultivation to trade, Lai Chau is gradually affirming its position on the map of Vietnamese medicinal herbs where ginseng not only enriches the land, but also enriches the people of the highlands.
