The secret to longevity of people in the coldest village in the world

VnExpressVnExpress12/05/2023

Russia In the coldest place in the world with an average temperature of minus 50 degrees Celsius, but the people of Oymyakon still live long lives thanks to fresh air, pure water and nutritious food.

Oymyakon is a small town in the Sakha Republic in northeastern Russia. With an average temperature of minus 50 degrees Celsius during the winter months, it is the coldest inhabited place on earth. In 1933, the record low temperature was minus 67.7 degrees Celsius. According to Insider , the population of Oymyakon in 2019 was around 500 people.

In winter, everything in Oymyakon can freeze quickly, from car engines, traffic lights, clothes... to people's hair and eyelashes. Also because of the year-round white snow, most of the locals only wear dark clothes for easy identification.

However, all activities of the 500 people still take place normally. More surprisingly, the people here live much longer than the global average. Sina page said that the average life expectancy of the Oymyakon people is 100, and some people even live to be 120 years old.

Harsh climate "tempers" healthy people

According to research, thanks to adapting to the harsh weather, the villagers have healthy bodies. In addition, the harsh climate also prevents pathogens from growing, creating a safe living environment. However, this advantage is also a disadvantage, as Oymyakon is not a place suitable for giving birth, so the birth rate here is very low.

In his 2021 book, 61-year-old athlete Wim Hof, known as the Iceman, also argues that anyone can become stronger, healthier and happier through cold, proper breathing and thinking. Through this, they can control the power of the mind to overcome life's challenges. Hof is famous for being able to play sports in cold weather and holds the record for running a marathon barefoot on snow.

When living in the cold, people need strong will and concentration to withstand the cold. In addition, the harsh weather also helps the body produce mood-enhancing substances, regulate the amount of stress hormone (cortisol), thereby helping people overcome pressure and become more resilient.

Clean air

Unaffected by factories, dust, and vehicles, Oymyakon village retains its pristine beauty, truly belonging to nature. Clean air is an important factor, directly affecting the vitality of people. Benefiting fully from this advantage, people in Oymyakon have the ability to live longer than other places.

A study by the University of Chicago (USA) shows that living in an area with clean air can help people live 5 years longer than in polluted areas.

Pure water source

Water and air quality play a decisive role in human health or illness. Although the harsh weather causes many disadvantages for the people, this place still maintains its extremely pure hot water source.

Even if the temperature drops to minus 70 degrees Celsius, the water here does not freeze. The reason is that Oymyakon has the thickest ice layer in the world, reaching a depth of up to 1,500 meters, creating pressure that helps the water flow without freezing. This water source is very pure, contributing to the health of the people.

Nutritious food

In harsh weather conditions, crops cannot grow. Therefore, the people's diet mainly consists of reindeer or horse meat, fish, frozen foods, milk and dairy products.

In addition, to cope with the cold, they often use a drink called Russki chai or Russian tea, made from sliced fruit, cinnamon, and four-leaf clover.

The fish caught directly by the locals are natural, clean and nutritious. The dish that is often prepared is sashimi (raw fish), an important source of nutrition that helps slow down the aging process and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Meanwhile, animal milk and meat provide them with enough nutrition, which is a weapon for the body to withstand harsh weather.
