Maybe my wife had a lover in the past.
(He calls his wife his ex-lover)
Just like me, I was the same in the past
Love a girl now she is married
At the beginning of the poem, the author talks about a common psychological trait in married life, when remembering the past, remembering the love affairs before the two people came together. This is a reality that cannot be changed, because everyone has a private emotional past before "getting married".
Love and marital affection have the greatest and most overarching characteristic of being unique, only one lover or one wife, one husband. This kind of affection does not accept sharing with anyone, cannot have a second person, seems very selfish, extremely selfish but that is love, marital affection. So someone exclaimed: "Even if for a minute I sit and dream of a new friend / Then loving you too much is useless".
Yet here, the poet talks about the most taboo thing: moments of distraction - a danger that threatens love and family happiness. What will happen?
Maybe my wife was weak-hearted in a moment.
Should keep thoughts secret not tell about dreams
My wife's ex has things that I don't have.
She didn't say it because she was afraid I would be sad.
The past may have been far away in the endless flow of time. Then there may be a thousand and one reasons, the past that seemed to be sleeping suddenly awakened. Those are the moments of human heartbreak, very real and very human that almost everyone encounters. And in memory, the image of the ex-lover may appear more ideal than in real life, more than the husband who shared her bed. But the wife also knows not to say things that should not be said, when comparing the two, the reason is easy to understand and very humane, delicate: because she is afraid of making her husband sad.
I also have moments when I feel upset.
When meeting an old lover, with things his wife does not have.
Thinking about the past sometimes feels like regret.
I didn't say anything because I was afraid my wife would be sad.
Marriage is different from love in this point, if love only shows us mostly rosy colors, then even in marriages considered to be the most ideal, there are still dark clouds passing over the private sky of married life. The husband in the poem, the lyrical character who calls himself “I” as well as the wife, although being a man, the stronger sex, considered to be stronger, still cannot avoid moments of heartbreak, still remembering the past love before marriage.
It seems like the story of moments of distraction will threaten family happiness and cause a rift in marriage. But no, it still goes on a safe path, reassuring the reader.
After thinking about it for a while, I love my wife more.
And feel like the guilty one
(Surely my wife understands what I'm not saying.
She also loves and takes care of me more)
Another very real feeling in married life, after moments of distraction, everyone has it and everyone feels like they are at fault, they take care of their spouse more, and are more responsible for the family happiness that both of them try to preserve and cultivate. That is the feeling, the conscience of people who live responsibly towards each other and themselves. They do not let the feeling of temporary distraction tempt them, drag them out of the safe orbit. It is just like a short dream, a passing cloud in the summer sky. Everything returns to normal, like the pendulum swinging, as if nothing had ever happened.
But why blame the moments of distraction?
Everyone has a time to love and a time to remember.
Everyone has moments outside of husband and wife.
Do not blame the moments of distraction!
The last stanza is like an affirmation, a sincere confession that often does not need to be said but still makes people feel very sympathetic and understanding. Everyone has moments like that, even if it is an ideal marriage. Just acknowledge this psychological reality (and even if you do not acknowledge it, it still exists), to see the complexity and preciousness of marriage, of the love between husband and wife. That is the ordinary and very humane message of the poem.
The work is a discovery of everyday life but subtle, seeing a phenomenon so familiar that it is common but still strange when read, but described truthfully, without any embellishment, so it conquers the reader. The poem has touched the deepest feelings in each person, very real emotions that most have or will experience. Those are very human emotions, enriching married life whether we want it or not and further enhancing the value and noble meaning of married life, making those who go through it more experienced and cherish what they have.
