Two Japanese companies, Osaka Gas and Eneos, are collaborating on a joint project to convert CO2 into fuel.

They will build a large-scale plant using methanation technology in Osaka Bay, to convert CO2 into methane.
With this technology, CO2 gas will combine with hydrogen gas to create methane gas, the main ingredient in domestic gas. Methanation method is increasingly focused on because it is a more effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions than existing methods such as using liquefied natural gas.
Osaka Gas will collect CO2 from the plants, while Eneos will buy hydrogen produced using renewable energy overseas. It is expected that by 2030, the amount of methane produced will be enough to meet the needs of about 250,000 households per year.
“We aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This project is an important effort to achieve that goal,” said Miyagawa Tadashi, Deputy General Manager of Osaka Gas.
