Bitcoin approaches $100,000, gold price hits 2-week high

ANTD.VN - Bitcoin surged after the Chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission - who spearheaded efforts to regulate the cryptocurrency industry - resigned on Thursday.

During the trading session on November 21 (last night Vietnam time), Bitcoin set a new record high when it surpassed 99,120 USD. By 10:00 am Vietnam time, this currency was still anchored at a high of about 98,535 USD.

Cryptocurrencies surged after news broke that US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler announced he will step down on January 20, 2025.

Over the years, Mr. Gensler has been at the forefront of the regulator’s efforts to control the cryptocurrency industry. He has created dissent with the broader crypto community, especially after the agency announced enforcement actions against major companies in the industry, including Coinbase, Binance and Kraken.

The announcement of his resignation comes after President-elect Donald Trump pledged to fire Gensler if elected. Cryptocurrency loyalists were excited by the news, hoping that Trump would consider creating a new position in the White House dedicated to cryptocurrency policy.

Along with cryptocurrencies, gold prices also continued to strengthen their recovery momentum, a rare "companionship" development because normally, these two assets have an inverse correlation. Currently, the international spot gold price is trading around 2,688 USD/ounce, the highest level in the past 2 weeks.

Higher demand for safe havens due to escalating geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine has caused money to continue flowing into gold.
