Commercial electricity is expected to reach about 500.4-557.8 billion kWh by 2030. |
The conference, chaired by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, was held in person and online connecting to 63 provinces and cities.
At the conference, Mr. Pham Nguyen Hung, Director of the Electricity Department, announced Decision No. 768/QD-TTg dated April 15 of the Prime Minister approving the Adjustment of the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 (Adjusted Power Plan VIII).
Accordingly, the overall goal of the planning is to firmly ensure national energy security, meet the requirements of socio -economic development and industrialization and modernization of the country. Successfully implement equitable energy transition associated with production modernization, build smart grids, manage advanced power systems, in line with the world's green transition, emission reduction, and science and technology development trends. Form a comprehensive energy industry ecosystem based on renewable energy and new energy.
Regarding national energy security, the plan aims to provide enough electricity for domestic demand, meeting socio-economic development goals with an average GDP growth rate of about 10%/year in the 2026-2030 period and about 7.5%/year in the 2031-2050 period.
The target of commercial electricity is about 500.4 - 557.8 billion kWh by 2030. Thereby, the planning orientation to 2050 is about 1,237.7 - 1,375.1 billion kWh.
Electricity production and import by 2030 is expected to reach about 560.4-624.6 billion kWh, while the target for 2050 is about 1,360.1-1,511.1 billion kWh.
Also according to the plan by 2030, the maximum capacity will reach about 89,655-99,934 MW and the next 20 years will fluctuate between 205,732 - 228,570 MW.
In addition, the adjusted Power Plan VIII ensures safe and reliable power supply, meeting the N-1 criteria for important load areas and N-2 criteria for especially important load areas and nuclear power sources. The goal by 2030 is to have power supply reliability in the top 4, and the power access index in the top 3 leading ASEAN countries.
Thereby, striving to have 50% of office buildings and 50% of houses using self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power (serving on-site consumption, not selling electricity to the national power system). Regarding ensuring national energy security, the plan aims to provide enough domestic electricity demand, meeting the socio-economic development target with an average GDP growth rate of about 10%/year in the period 2026-2030 and about 7.5%/year in the period 2031-2050.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that the adjustment of Power Plan VIII is of great significance in meeting the requirements of socio-economic development and ensuring national energy security... Therefore, provinces and cities must direct the review and update of power grid sources to ensure compliance with the content of the increased capacity scale in Power Plan VIII and the adjusted Power Plan VIII.
“Continue to review, amend and supplement relevant legal regulations, especially policies related to financial mechanisms and electricity prices (generally operating according to market mechanisms). Therefore, there needs to be a strong enough and attractive enough mechanism to encourage the development of energy sources, especially renewable energy and new energy to serve domestic and export needs” - Minister Nguyen Hong Dien suggested.
