The US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights and the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights have just released an investigative report concluding that Columbia University was "deliberately indifferent" to harassment targeting Jewish students, thereby violating Title 4 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to NBC News on June 5, citing the Department of Education's announcement.
Specifically, through an investigation that began in February, the offices found that Columbia University "failed to effectively protect Jewish students from severe and persistent harassment on campus," thereby depriving these students of equal access toeducational opportunities as required by law."
The report states that Columbia University has been violating the law since the Gaza conflict broke out on October 7, 2023.
In a statement, Columbia University said it was aware of the concerns raised by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and was working directly with the accrediting organization to address them. The school also affirmed its commitment to combating anti-Semitism on campus.
However, the Education Department argues that Columbia University is violating the standards of an accrediting organization called the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which requires accredited schools to fully comply with federal law.
Therefore, the Department of Education concluded that Columbia University no longer meets the standards for accreditation.
In the event of derecognition, Columbia University would lose access to student funding from the federal government.
