As more heavy machinery such as excavators and backfillers go electric, it not only reduces emissions on construction sites but also makes economic sense for businesses. Electric machinery typically costs less to operate than diesel-powered equipment, but recharging equipment that weighs up to 30 tons and can travel at speeds of just 5 miles per hour is a challenge.

To solve this problem, a Silicon Valley startup has developed a mobile charging solution called the Megawatt Mobile Charger. Designed by Dimaag-AI, a company founded by one of Tesla's co-founders, the Megawatt is essentially a large battery on wheels that can go almost anywhere without a driver. Notably, it has no steering wheel and is controlled remotely from a cozy control center.

The highlight of the Megawatt Mobile Charger is its charging capabilities. With a 295 kilowatt-hour battery pack, the device can provide up to 6 megawatts of power to multiple connected electric vehicles, making it easy to recharge heavy machinery. Thanks to a modular DC-to-DC converter, the device can deliver a minimum of 1 megawatt of power through the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) connector, capable of sending up to 1,000 volts and 1,500 amps.

The vehicle is powered by four electric motors, one for each wheel, and has four-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability, capable of handling gradients of up to 40%. Its top speed is 22 mph (35 km/h), and users can opt to install an autopilot.

Remarkably, the Megawatt Mobile Charger isn't just an idea. Heavy equipment giant Komatsu has partnered with Dimaag, promising that the device will soon be available on jobsites around the world .

“Despite the challenges of growing the electric construction equipment market, we are committed to advancing this effort through collaboration with companies like Dimaag, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Taisuke Kusaba, Senior Managing Director at Komatsu.
