(MPI) – Within the framework of the State visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to India from July 30 to August 1, 2024, and in accordance with the Prime Minister's directives, on the afternoon of July 31, 2024, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung held a brief working meeting with the Adani Group (India). The meeting took place immediately after Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Mr. Gautam Adani – Chairman of the Adani Group.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the Chairman of Adani Group announced a proposal to invest in Lien Chieu Port ( Da Nang ) with a projected total capital of 2 billion USD. This seaport is expected to complete the logistics ecosystem for Da Nang and the Central region.

Adani also plans to invest $2.8 billion in the Vinh Tan 3 thermal power project (Binh Thuan province). In addition, the group wants to participate in the construction of Long Thanh Airport Phase 2 (Dong Nai province) and Chu Lai Airport ( Quang Nam province ). “With our financial and technical capabilities, we will participate more deeply in many projects in Vietnam. That is my personal commitment,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressing his hope that the Prime Minister will encourage the group to fulfill this commitment.

The Prime Minister has instructed Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, along with relevant agencies and localities, to hold direct discussions with the Adani Group immediately after this meeting to definitively resolve related issues, agree on a course of action, and implement procedures in accordance with regulations.

Following the Prime Minister's directive, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung held a working meeting with Adani Group. Also present were representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the Da Nang People's Committee, and other relevant units.

During the meeting, the Minister listened to Adani's questions and concerns regarding the promotion of projects in Vietnam. After listening, the Minister requested that the parties immediately implement several measures to expedite the investment in the Lien Chieu seaport project in Vietnam, as well as other projects, in accordance with Vietnamese law.

Regarding the Lien Chieu port project, Vietnam intends to select a single investor for the overall infrastructure. As for the operation of this seaport, foreign companies can cooperate with domestic entities in accordance with the law. Therefore, Adani and the Anh Phat consortium need to urgently complete the procedures in accordance with Vietnamese law.

"If you have any problems or need any support, please share and discuss them with us. We will work with relevant Vietnamese authorities to research, resolve, and provide assistance," the Minister shared.

Representatives of Adani Group stated that they will continue to expedite the completion of investment procedures for the project, closely coordinating with the Ministry of Planning and Investment and other relevant agencies of Vietnam to promptly implement the project in accordance with regulations.

Adani Group is the operator of India's largest airport and controls Mundra Port – India's largest port. The group also invests in power transmission and green energy. Gautam Adani, 61, was once the richest person in Asia and the third richest in the world with a net worth of over $150 billion in September 2022. According to the latest Forbes ranking, he is currently the second richest person in Asia with a net worth of $87.6 billion, behind his compatriot Mukesh Ambani.

According to the plan, Lien Chieu is a Class I deep-water port with a strategically important location, serving as a connecting point for the international East-West economic corridor and a gateway to the entire Central region. Upon completion, the port's general cargo terminal will have a capacity of 100,000 tons, and the container terminal 200,000 tons. The port's capacity is projected to reach approximately 100 million tons of cargo throughput per year by 2045. It is estimated that the State will invest around 3,000 billion VND in shared infrastructure and attract investment for the integrated development of this seaport.
