According to information from the Ministry of Health , measles has now been recorded in many adults, including severe cases and deaths. Therefore, high-risk subjects need to proactively get vaccinated against measles to prevent and limit dangerous complications.

In Vietnam, measles vaccine is indicated for children from 9 months of age with a full regimen of 2 injections.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases that can affect anyone. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, otitis media, corneal ulcers, diarrhea, and can even lead to death.

Currently, the number of measles cases in adults is increasing. Many of these cases are severe, even fatal.

To strengthen measles prevention and control and minimize severe or fatal cases, the Ministry of Health has issued specific recommendations for groups at high risk of severe measles-related complications.

People at high risk include: People with chronic lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, people over 50 years old, especially those with unknown vaccination history or who have never had measles. These people should proactively get vaccinated against measles for the best protection.

When people at high risk have suspected measles symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, rash... they need to go to a medical facility immediately for examination, consultation and timely treatment to limit dangerous complications.

In addition, it is necessary to limit contact with people who have or are suspected of having measles. In case of unavoidable contact, it is necessary to wear a mask and clean hands thoroughly afterwards.

At the same time, people need to pay attention to improving personal hygiene, nose and throat hygiene, keeping the body warm, improving physical condition to increase resistance to disease. It is necessary to ensure that the living, working and studying environment is always airy and clean; regularly clean the surfaces of living areas.

In Vietnam, measles vaccine is indicated for children from 9 months of age with a full regimen of 2 injections. Through surveys and research, the Ministry of Health chose the 9-month age mark because this is the time when children no longer have passive antibodies from their mothers, vaccination will help create effective immunity.

In epidemic and high-risk areas, children can be vaccinated from 6 months to under 9 months of age (called measles dose 0) for early prevention. After that, children continue to be vaccinated with dose 1 at 9 or 12 months of age according to the correct regimen.

For children under 6 months of age, experts recommend preventing the disease by vaccinating family members who are in frequent contact with the child.

Adults can inadvertently become an intermediate source of infection. Therefore, adult vaccination not only protects themselves but also creates an invisible "shield" to protect children until they are old enough to be vaccinated.

At the same time, this is also a way to create cross-immunity for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, the elderly, people with underlying diseases and people with immunodeficiency.

The Ministry of Health affirmed that it will continue to closely monitor the progress of the vaccination campaign, ensuring that vaccination activities are carried out safely, effectively and economically.

This is one of the important measures to protect the health of children and the community, preventing the spread of measles in the context of the risk of a re-outbreak.

With the continuous efforts of the Ministry of Health, relevant agencies and local authorities, the 2025 measles vaccination campaign will make an important contribution to protecting public health, creating a solid foundation for controlling measles and other infectious diseases in the future.

Dr. Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of VNVC Vaccination System, said that although measles vaccine is highly effective, it is necessary to fully vaccinate according to the schedule. If only one dose of vaccine is given, the disease prevention efficiency is only about 85%.

Therefore, two doses are necessary for optimal protection. Most people who have received two doses will not get measles or, if they do, their symptoms will be very mild.
