New era of hybrid cars in Vietnam

In the context of the Vietnamese automobile market gradually electrifying, BYD has officially entered with a dual product strategy, including pure electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). The focus of this strategy is DM-i Super Hybrid technology, a unique powertrain designed with a philosophy of prioritizing the use of electricity. The first model to apply this technology is the BYD Sealion 6 SUV, bringing a new definition of operating efficiency and driving experience to the hybrid segment.

Structure and operating principle of DM-i Super Hybrid

Unlike traditional hybrid systems that rely on gasoline engines as the main source of power, BYD's DM-i Super Hybrid technology relies on electric power as its foundation. The core structure of this system consists of three main components: a high-performance 1.5L gasoline engine, an EHS (Electric Hybrid System) electric motor system, and BYD's proprietary Blade Battery.

The system works by optimizing energy use at all speeds. The gasoline engine operates most of the time as a generator to charge the battery, or only directly drives the wheels at high and steady speeds, where it achieves the best thermal efficiency. This minimizes fuel consumption and provides a smooth, quiet driving experience similar to that of an electric vehicle.

Smart operating modes

The DM-i Super Hybrid system is capable of automatically switching between three operating modes to ensure optimal efficiency in different driving conditions:

  • EV Mode: When the battery is fully charged, the vehicle operates entirely on electricity, providing a quiet, zero-emission experience. BYD claims a pure electric range of more than 120 km, making it suitable for daily urban commuting.
  • Series HEV mode: At low or medium speed when the battery is low, the gasoline engine will start and act as a generator to provide power to the electric motor, while recharging the battery. The wheels are still driven entirely by the electric motor.
  • Parallel HEV mode: When traveling at high speeds on the highway or needing to accelerate quickly, both the gasoline engine and electric motor will transmit power to the wheels at the same time, maximizing power and efficiency.

Real-world performance and extensions

The “electric first - gasoline later” philosophy not only helps the DM-i Super Hybrid achieve impressive fuel consumption but also significantly improves the driving experience. The driver will feel the immediate response from the electric motor, eliminating the lag often found in traditional internal combustion engines. During a cross-country trip held in June, the Sealion 6 model recorded a distance of 1,795.1 km with only one tank of gas and one full battery charge, a testament to the system’s effectiveness in real-world operating conditions.

In addition, BYD also equips its car models with additional utilities. The DC fast charging support system allows charging from 30% to 80% of battery capacity in about 35 minutes. In particular, V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology allows the car to become a mobile power station, providing power for electronic devices during picnics or in emergency situations, increasing the versatility of the car.

Product positioning and strategy in Vietnam

With the launch of the Sealion 6 and the upcoming Seal 5 sedan, BYD is gradually building a diverse product portfolio that meets a variety of needs. The DM-i Super Hybrid technology is a strategic weapon that helps BYD compete in the green car segment, providing an attractive option for customers who want to experience the benefits of electric vehicles without worrying about charging station infrastructure.

The warranty policy is also a highlight, with a 6-year or 150,000 km warranty package for the entire vehicle and 8 years or 160,000 km for core components of the electrical system such as the battery, motor and controller. This shows the brand's confidence in the durability and quality of the technology.

Conclude

BYD’s DM-i Super Hybrid technology is not just another hybrid powertrain on the market. It represents a different approach, prioritizing the role of electricity to maximize efficiency and a refined driving experience. The success of this technology on models like the Sealion 6 will be a decisive factor in BYD’s position in the electrification race in Vietnam.
