The white alligator, which is female, was born in August, but Gatorland only recently announced the good news on social media, describing the new addition as "pure white and with beautiful blue eyes."
Park President and CEO Mark McHugh said he was overcome with emotion when he received the good news of the birth. "We have been trying to get a white crocodile for a long time," he said.
The white alligator is an individual with albinism, a condition that represents the rarest genetic variation among alligators in the United States.
Albino crocodiles differ from albino crocodiles, which are all-white, completely lacking pigment and have pink eyes. Albino crocodiles, on the other hand, have lost some of the pigment in their skin and eye color, allowing their eyes to appear blue.
"Since the discovery of the white alligator nest in the Louisiana swamps 36 years ago, today is the first time we have witnessed the birth of a white alligator from that nest," Gatorland announced on social media.
A total of two alligators were born at Gatorland this time, with the other being normal in color. They are the offspring of an albino father and a mother with the recessive albino gene.
Albino crocodile
A Florida theme park plans to unveil a rare alligator and its littermates in 2024.
Their health is now being carefully monitored to ensure the pair of crocodiles develop normally.
To date, there are only seven albino alligators in the world that are descendants of the 18 alligators that nested in Louisiana in 1987.
For comparison, wildlife experts estimate there are between 100 and 200 albino crocodiles worldwide.
