Billionaire Elon Musk's Grokipedia articles are often almost copied from Wikipedia?

In October, billionaire Musk said that "Grokipedia will surpass Wikipedia many times in terms of richness, depth and accuracy of information."

However, according to the news verification site Politifact on November 12, articles on Grokipedia are often almost copied from Wikipedia.

The information that Grokipedia adds to articles is often of poor quality, lacking or misquoting sources, and prone to errors, making the AI ​​tool that is promoted as a Wikipedia alternative less reliable.

For example, Grokipedia's article structure is similar to Wikipedia's, with a reference list at the end. However, in some cases, Grokipedia copies Wikipedia articles but omits the citations and reference lists.

Billionaire Musk once said that his team had trained AI chatbot Grok to go through a million Wikipedia articles and "add, edit, and delete." Grokipedia articles often carry the tagline "Fact-checked by Grok."

Politifact reviewed articles on Grokipedia and found that when the article included a language different from the language already present on Wikipedia, the new content had no citations, no references, or made misleading/subjective claims.

Grokipedia also often leaves context out of articles.

Politifact found at least one instance of Grokipedia getting things wrong. The article on the “Nobel Prize in Physics” on Grokipedia and Wikipedia are quite similar, but Grokipedia adds a sentence: “Traditionally, physics is the first prize awarded at the Nobel Prize ceremony.” This is incorrect, since for at least the last few years, the Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded first.

Mr. Joseph Reagle, associate professor of media studies at Northeastern University (USA), said that Grokipedia misunderstood the strengths of Wikipedia and AI.

The advantage of Wikipedia, according to Mr. Reagle, is that it is the result of a community of thousands of people working hard to create high-quality content, while AI is useful because it is interactive and accepts feedback.

Wikipedia allows anyone to contribute and edit articles, and ensures transparency by allowing article histories to be viewed. A number of senior volunteers are empowered to address negative behavior on the platform.

On the other hand, Grokipedia only gives users the ability to suggest edits to articles already published on the platform, but there is no feature that allows them to read what has been edited.

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that runs Wikipedia, is also aware of the problem of plagiarism but cannot control the quality of Grokipedia's content.
