Experts "advise" how to teach and learn in the "AI storm"

In the context of artificial intelligence (AI) having a profound impact on all areas of life, especially education, teaching and learning activities are no longer just a process of imparting knowledge but also a journey of preserving and promoting core human values.

Consequences of AI abuse

On the afternoon of November 15, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Southern Center for Education and Training Development (Ministry of Education and Training), in collaboration with An Publishing & Education (Anbooks) and VietSuccess, organized a discussion on "Learning and asking in the AI storm - preserving humanity in the optimal era" and a book launch exchange "The Last Class" by Dr. Hoang Anh Duc.

At the seminar, experts pointed out the negative and positive impacts when AI "attacks" the school environment, and shared methods and advice for teachers and students to adapt flexibly in the era of the AI "storm".

Speaking at the program, Dr. Hoang Anh Duc, author of the book "The Last Class", a research scholar at RMIT University Vietnam, said that learning in the AI era has become more difficult as the amount of knowledge increases and the way people receive and process information has changed.

Besides, the teaching method still focuses on memorizing formulas instead of understanding the essence, lacking personalization according to each student's ability and orientation, while the time for experience, practice and creative thinking is limited.

But if AI is abused, users will fall into a state of receiving instant answers without having to "think". The result is that it is impossible to learn skills that require a long time, students easily give up when encountering difficulties. Creating a dependency loop "having problems using AI - the brain cannot solve it by itself - similar problems appear - more dependent on AI - causing self-confidence to decrease - having problems again".

Sharing the same view, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, Director of Pathway School & Pathway Academy, said: Anything that is achieved too quickly and too easily comes at a price. For example, when using technology to support learning, if the answer comes too easily, we will lose the opportunity to remember and understand deeply.

Mr. Ngo Thanh Nam, Principal of B.School Primary, Secondary and High School, also said: "When teaching, I always wonder how to make it easy for students to access lessons, how to make knowledge truly "touch" them. Even when grading papers, if we only rely on AI without taking the time to observe and contemplate why students do that and answer that way, it will lose the value of the educational process. We need to know how to apply technology appropriately, not completely depend on it."

Advice on teaching and learning in the era of AI "explosion"

Mr. Le Thang Loi - Director of the Southern Center for Education and Training Development, Office of the Ministry of Education and Training said: "Technology in general, artificial intelligence (AI) is deeply affecting all areas of our lives. More than ever, we need a new mindset, new strategies and more importantly, instead of being too hasty or worried, we need to adapt, master and exploit it most effectively for our study, work and life".

Mr. Le Thang Loi - Director of the Southern Center for Education and Training Development, Office of the Ministry of Education and Training, spoke at the program.

Similarly, Mr. Tran Nam Dung, Vice Principal of Gifted High School, VNU-HCM said: When the trend of using ChatGPT appeared, many students used this tool to deal with the exercises assigned by teachers. According to the teacher, we should not prohibit it in a technical way, but rather guide students to understand the purpose of learning. In learning, the process of finding solutions is more important than the answers, because it is the way to help students form their thinking, from which they can solve new types of problems in the future.

"In reality, there are diligent students but there are also lazy students who use AI to solve the problem. Therefore, teachers need to have appropriate testing methods, such as question and answer, a way that students cannot "hide" whether they understand the lesson or not. Teachers should also innovate the way they give lessons and teach, for example: let students create a math problem themselves, or ask them to present and explain their solutions. I do not tend to lecture too much, jokingly calling it "hugging the board". I let students work more. They go to the board to do exercises and experience practice. Those activities help students be proactive, instead of just finding ways to cope with technology", Mr. Dung shared.

" Regarding the application of AI in education , the most important issue lies in the approach : how to effectively apply AI to teaching without losing core values. Teachers still have to focus on teaching students about ethics and emotions , helping them know how to behave, understand themselves and others, something that technology cannot replace," emphasized Mr. Ngo Thanh Nam.

Dr. Phan Thanh Binh, Former Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, spoke at the program.

Also giving his opinion at the program, Dr. Phan Thanh Binh, former Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, expressed: If students want to use AI, we should not prohibit it; instead, teachers can ask them to do another answer without using AI, then compare which one is better, why? so that students can understand the lesson more deeply. We should encourage students to research and apply AI to participate in building lessons, turning technology into a tool to support the learning process.

"In addition to knowledge, education also teaches people to respect the community and develop humanity. In the context of an unknown future, AI is currently just an algorithm, but concentration, self-improvement, focusing on the process and cultivating humanity are still the most important foundations," Mr. Binh emphasized.

On this occasion, the Program's Organizing Committee exchanged and launched the book "The Last Class" by Dr. Hoang Anh Duc. The work is a profound fictional story about the future of education and human nature in the age of AI.

Set in the year 2525, “The Last Class” unfolds in a seemingly perfect world where a technology called Neural Tapestry allows people to download knowledge directly into their brains, eliminating traditional classrooms, textbooks, and the messy process of discovery learning that can’t predict outcomes. However, when a group of students experience an unexpected disconnection from the Neural Tapestry, they discover something profound: the irreplaceable value of thinking for themselves.
