Professor Nguyen Quang Tuan's office is located on the 4th floor of the Department of Examination and Treatment on Demand of the Friendship Hospital. It is no longer a large, spacious room like when he was the Director of Hanoi Heart Hospital or Bach Mai Hospital, but Professor Tuan is able to practice his profession there. Because he loves his profession, misses his profession, and cares for his patients, Professor Tuan, a practicing doctor, after 30 years of practice, has returned to work as a practicing doctor. This is unprecedented.
Professor Nguyen Quang Tuan shared that in his situation, many people would choose another path, but being able to interact with and treat patients is the dream of all doctors, including Professor Tuan.
After 3 years of not being able to wear his familiar white coat, now every morning Professor Tuan goes to the ward to check on the condition of the patients and the doctors.
“Because I don’t have a practice certificate, I can only observe patients and not examine them. I haven’t held a scalpel again, because surgery or signing medical prescriptions can only be done after I have a practice license. I also advise my colleagues on how to handle and intervene to find the best treatment strategy for patients. My main job is to advise my colleagues on serious cases using my many years of experience in the profession. According to regulations, practicing doctors must have 12 months of work experience at a specialized or general hospital at the provincial or central level,” Professor Tuan shared.
Professor Tuan's work is mainly focused in the morning, in the afternoon he can handle other things himself.
What makes him happiest is that many patients have heard that he practices at the Friendship Hospital and have come to see him. He cannot hide his joy when meeting patients. Now, every day he returns to work is a joy.
He also shared about the first case he encountered after 3 years, an 86-year-old former patient in Dong Da district, Hanoi. She had cardiovascular disease, 20 years ago I placed a stent for her at Bach Mai Hospital.
Professor Nguyen Quang Tuan also shared about the past 3 years. It was a memorable time but it all passed. At that time, he missed his job and his patients. He wrote a new book series called Wisdom in Lifestyle - Secrets to Preventing Non-Communicable Diseases. Right during the days of execution, when there were patients who needed medical support, they needed support from experienced experts. With his knowledge and experience, he advised doctors, supported medical examinations for patients and prison officers.
"After going through this, the important thing is to let go. But let go of the external halo, but the core of myself as a doctor and teacher, I cannot let go. I always wish to return to work soon, as long as I still have the strength, I will continue to do it," said Professor Nguyen Quang Tuan.
Now that he is back to work, he will continue to study, improve his knowledge, and treat people. Professor Tuan plans to apply to a university in the future to teach.
Professor Tuan, 57 years old, is a leading expert in cardiovascular medicine. He has many years of experience as a lecturer in the Department of Cardiology, Hanoi Medical University; a doctor at the Cardiology Institute, Bach Mai Hospital, before becoming Director of Hanoi Heart Hospital from 2012 to March 2020. In March 2020, he became Director of Bach Mai Hospital until his arrest the following year.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Tuan, former Director of Bach Mai Hospital, was prosecuted by the Ministry of Public Security's Investigation Agency to investigate and clarify his responsibility related to violations of "inflating" prices of medical equipment that occurred at Hanoi Heart Hospital - where Mr. Tuan was also the previous Director.
Former Director of Hanoi Heart Hospital Nguyen Quang Tuan and 11 others in the medical supplies price hike case caused a loss of more than 53 billion VND.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Tuan was sentenced to 3 years in prison and is not banned from holding any position or practicing any profession after serving the sentence.
