Need long-term strategy for high-quality human resources

Universities have been training in line with the needs of businesses for many years. However, the shortage of labor, especially skilled workers and engineers, is still a big challenge for FDI enterprises in Da Nang.

Strengthening school-business linkages

Da Nang currently has 20 universities and higher education institutions with approximately 120,000 students. The supply of engineering human resources to FDI enterprises is implemented on the basis of practical, flexible and co-creative approaches.

In recent times, the University of Science and Technology (University of Danang) has maintained strategic cooperation with many FDI enterprises in most fields. Enterprises not only participate in shaping the training program, but also accompany in the process of organizing teaching, guiding internships and recruiting.

One of the typical cooperation models is Capstone Project (CP) - students carry out graduation projects on real-life problems proposed by businesses and are co-supervised by lecturers and business experts. All Capstone Project students in the field of microchips are recruited into businesses in the industry, not only in Da Nang but also in the regional market.

In addition, about 70 - 80% of engineers at microchip design companies in Da Nang are alumni of the University of Technology, and for some FDI enterprises, including Renesas Company, this rate is 100%.

Similarly, in the field of aviation mechanics, the University of Technology is the first university in the Central Highlands to open a training major according to the order of Universal Alloys Corporation (UAC, USA) - an FDI enterprise producing aviation components located in the Da Nang High-Tech Park. The on-demand training model has helped to directly meet the demand for specialized engineers, reduce retraining time and create a foundation for long-term cooperation in technology development.

Meanwhile, in the period of 2020 - 2025, the University of Economics (University of Danang) has provided an estimated more than 18,000 bachelors, masters and doctors to the labor market, of which more than 3,000 people are working at FDI enterprises in localities across the country and the Southeast Asia region, mainly in the fields of foreign trade, tourism, finance - banking, accounting - auditing, e-commerce, logistics, marketing, management information systems, human resource management, economic law and data science.

Every year, about 700 - 800 students participate in internship programs, Co-op and FDI enterprise projects, of which 60% are officially recruited after graduation.

The school offers a variety of training programs, including full-time, part-time English and standard programs, to meet the human resource needs of many different segments, especially the FDI business sector. The school has 19 full-time or part-time English programs, integrating business, management and technology.

At the same time, develop international joint programs, allowing students to study 2-3 years at the school and 1-2 years at prestigious partner schools in Australia, Germany, UK... to help access modern training methods and increase job opportunities in FDI enterprises.

Human resources are the key factor

However, recruitment is still difficult for businesses. According to Mr. Yamaguchi Kaoru, General Director of Fujikura Automotive Vietnam, Fujikura's wiring harnesses are manufactured with the highest quality standards, meeting the strict requirements of the world's leading automobile manufacturers, requiring human resources to perform complex skills and have high professional qualifications.

“Recruiting staff is always an annual challenge for the unit. The reasons leading to the mismatch between employees and business needs can be attributed to factors such as: the difference between university training content and practical skills required by businesses; lack of information on career orientation after graduation and not fully adapting to the diverse needs of businesses,” Mr. Yamaguchi Kaoru shared.

Besides, Mr. Yamaguchi Kaoru said that in order for Da Nang to attract more FDI capital in the coming time, in addition to developing high-quality infrastructure, the city needs to continue to loosen regulations and improve the investment environment, and train high-quality human resources.

Similarly, according to Mr. Phung Minh Hieu, Asia-Pacific University Talent Partner of Marvell Group, the problem FDI enterprises face is “retraining” when recruiting. Although the workers have a good foundation, they still do not fully meet the product standards of the enterprise.

Furthermore, FDI enterprises require a high level of foreign language skills. For example, at Marvell, engineers not only work with Vietnamese colleagues but also with teams in Singapore, Taiwan (China), the US, etc., so in addition to expertise, foreign language is a necessary factor.

Standing Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Ho Ky Minh said that in order to develop high-quality human resources to serve priority development areas, the city is encouraging universities to promote cooperation with international universities to train human resources that meet international standards.

The city proactively invests in laboratories, for example, those on semiconductors, microchip design, artificial intelligence, etc., for use by universities and businesses.

In addition, businesses, especially those operating in key sectors that the city is prioritizing, are encouraged to cooperate and exchange with training institutions, establish creative spaces, co-working spaces, etc.
