Video released by the Martin County Sheriff's Office in Florida shows Ryan Routh being arrested on the afternoon of September 15 on Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach. Only 18 seconds of the arrest were shown, in which police ordered the suspect to back up toward the security forces, pulling his shirt over his head with both hands. "Driver, back up straight. Keep backing up," one officer shouted before his teammates rushed in to handcuff the suspect. Routh wore sunglasses and appeared to smile as he was taken away.

According to Martin County Sheriff Will Snyder, local authorities had to chase more than 3 km to surround Routh's car. Suspect Routh had previously ambushed to assassinate former US President Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. Secret Service agents discovered the suspect's gun barrel protruding from the fence near where Mr. Trump was playing and the two sides exchanged gunfire. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw previously shared photos of Routh's hideout near the golf course fence, where the shooting suspect also found an AK-47-style assault rifle with a scope, a GoPro camera and two backpacks filled with bricks hanging on a nearby fence. Suspect Routh appeared in federal court in West Palm Beach on September 16, charged with "possession of a firearm while a convicted felon" and "possession of a firearm with an erased serial number", facing a maximum of 20 years in prison. The move is likely to allow authorities to keep Routh in custody while they file additional charges. The suspect has expressed support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He has said he would travel to Ukraine “to fight to the death” and has participated in protests in Kiev. Ukrainian officials, however, have said they have no connection to Routh. Police records show Routh has had dozens of run-ins with law enforcement and has been arrested while living in North Carolina on charges including drug possession, driving without a license, operating a vehicle with expired registration and without insurance.
